Ritter Park Finds, 06/18/2008.

Today was sunny and cool here in West Virginia, so I decided that I would go to Ritter Park here in my town of Huntington. The park department is building a addition to the Kiddy area by adding more sand and building new structures. They have movered the earth around and have the dirt in piles as well. So I started searching these newly worked areas in hopes of saving a silver coin or two. Boy, what a day this turned out to be.The first good signal I dug was a 1947 Wheat Cent with a square hole in it. After a little while, I had a good signal that was a 00-28 on the meter. This coin turned out to be a 1909 Barber Dime. At this point, I was happy. a few minutes later I pulled out a black cupped type disk. I did not take time to examine the object, there would be plenty time to do that at home. Then, another signal turned out to be a 1925 Buffalo Nickel in great shape. I found two more Wheat Cents, 1920, 1927. The storm clouds were starting to move in, and I decided to detect my way back to my SUV when, 00-29 numbers popped up on the screen. The signal was screaming Silver Quarter to me, The coin was less than an inch deep, pushed out by the Bulldozer. I picked up the silver quarter and about fell down the hill I was searching. It turned out to be a 1917-D Standing Liberty Quarter, Type II Variety in Extra Fine Condition. This is only the second one of these quarters that I have found in my 40 years detecting in this condition. I have found several others before, but never in this condition. At Thant point I turned of EX-II and headed for the shelter of my SUV. This was a good 2 hour hunt. I was Pleased. HH. Jesse.

I was tired when I wrote this post and forgot to add that I found a 1914 Barber Dime and the black cupped disk turned out to be a silver dime that was in a fire, thus the cupped shape. What a day. HH...Jesse.

Great digs! Beautiful SLQ!

There has to be alot of great finds still there and this would be the perfect time to be detecting this site. I would first detect the area's that had dirt scraped off of or pushed around and then work the piles. Later on, when they start to level the piles of dirt, then you can find more Coins that they spread out from the piles for you to find. Sounds like a lot of Silver still waiting for your return. Good Luck and HH.

From the main part of Ritter along the road that is blocked off. What size coil were you using? You may hit a few of the deep ones with a larger coil. I've worked the park down around 14th street and dug lots of wheats but no silver yet. Hope you find many more when you get back out!

Nice going Jesse, ~ two hours well spent !

I use the stock coil on my EX-II. I have been hunting Ritter Park on and off for the last 40 years, and still manage to find at least 1 silver coin each hunt. I have pulled hundreds of silver coins from here over the years. Just keep searching and you will find them. Thanks...Jesse.
