Safari and Myrtle Beach

I'm on vacation this week at Myrtle Beach, took the Safari on the sand today. This is the first time I've used the Safari on any beach and I gotta report that, so far, it appears to be a great beach machine on both wet and dry sand. I hunted in low tide right up to the edge and even in the water and the Safari did great nailing coins up to 12 inches, holes were filling up with water as fast as I could dig but finally the sand gave up quarters, nickels, dimes, and pennies (pull-tabs and screw tops too of course). If anyone wonders if this machine will work well in wet ocean water, have no fear if you plan to use it on South Carolina's ocean shores. Maybe tomorrow will bring some gold rings or other jewelry.

Thanks for the 'Low Tide' updates, Now all I need is to hit on gold/jewelry

Went out this morning about 7:30. Tide is coming in so I couldn't get out where I'd like. Anyway, the Safari was hitting on quarters like it'd never done before, I mean I didn't find enough to buy a loaf of bread but eight of them popped up in a couple hours. Again, nickels, dimes, pennies, and quarters to go with a pretty yellow match-box Dodge. This afternoon at 4:25 (low tide) I plan to hit it again (if she will let me!).

Here's what I'm doing. I start as close to the water's edge as I can and work to the next trash barrel, the turn and work my way back to the starting point. With every turn I work my way back up to the top or end of the beach area. I drag behind me my digger which scribes a path in the sand so I know where I've been. I am using the Jewelry/Coin search mode. I hate to dig all those 14s and 15s because most of them are either pull tabs or twist tops but I hope the next one will be jewelry.

Don- Most welcome. Nice grid method,there. Those 14s & 15s are often nickels here on the Jersey shore. Give a try switching to low density for cleaner areas, slightly better target depth and TID reading (per Mastering the Quattto) . HH

Yep, they are nickels here and where I live too but many of them are also those dreaded pull tabs and twist tops here at Myrtle Beach. I might consider passing over those numbers but I know I could be passing over some nice jewelry too, so, with hesitation, I'm digging them.

Today, more quarters, I've never pulled as many quarters from the sand at Myrtle Beach as I have this year and every one of them have been 8 to 12+ inches deep, 90% have been near the water's edge at low tide. No gold rings or any jewelry yet other that a dog tag, maybe tomorrow.

Vacation is over, leaving here early in the morning and I leave w/o gold. Here's the deal, I got tired of digging pull-tabs and twist tips so I quit. The last two days I didn't dig anything with an ID# below 32, I even refused to scoop a 15 unless it was one scoop deep, most of them were nickels. So, goodbye Myrtle Beach and hello Virginia, her I come.

We really did have a great time and I relentlessly hunted every morning and every evening at low tide (every evening except today, I took the evening off and ate seafood with the family)

So, what do I take away from here other than a great time? Literally a bag full of quarters, dimes, nickels, pennies, pull-tabs. twist tops, a matchbox car, and a dog tag (okay, so it's a small bag ).

Hi Daug, unfortunatley its" no pain no gain" on the beach, If you continue in what you are doing the chances are slim for regular decent finds as you are avoiding the signals that include the gold and goodies.
With the Safari as with a lot of dcent machines the display should be nearly forgotten about and targets dug on signal alone. The TID is not fully accurate and a lot of factors determine what displays ie. depth, angle or position and size of target.
My preferred settings are all metal ferrous, high trash, no discrimination, sensitivity in manual as high as situation permits. I dig all high signals and avoid low iron grunts regardless of what the display says and this has been very rewarding. You will dig more but at least you will have a chance of finding gold and silver.
If you are limited with time you can discrim out all below and above the gold range and dig all high signals (in ferrous), this will narrow the field of detection and eliminate a lot of coins etc but you may get lucky,

John, thanks for the reminder, I am sure there are a lot of success stories about finds at Myrtle Beach but that one was back in April 2009 I bet there hasn't been such a find since (kidding of course). We had a great time and I dug pull tabs and twist tope for four days, morning and evening (along with clad, 4oz lead sinkers, trinkets and other stuff).

PullRingKing, thanks for the information, I know all that you said is true and I knew exactly what I was doing when I made the decision to stop digging those gold and jewelry tones, but I just got tired of digging. I knew my chances would drop at least by 99% of finding jewelry when I made the decision not to pull those lower tones and to only dig a 15 no deeper than a single scoop, but I just got tired of digging. If everything would have been only 2 or 3 inches, I man not have made that decision, but serioulsy, probably 75% of all I dug was 8 - 12 inches deep - I was getting blisters on my digging hand

Anyway, we're back home now and we had a great vacation and I did spend a lot of time hunting. Now I can't wait to get back to my familiar spots to go for some silver and other goodies. Thank you all for following my uneventful MDing report.

I go to the campgrounds on the south side of Myrtle toward Surfside Beach. Some finds are made there but I have only pulled clad and a few Matchbox cars. Its barren compared to N.M.Beach and M.B. where all the high rises are at. Going to MB for 3 days and will commute to these locations.
