Safari recovery speed?

Mick in Dubbo

New member
Hi Andy.
I am curious as to how the recovery speed of the Safari compares to the Explorer, E-Trac series. Which of this series would be closest to the recovery speed of the Safari?
Thanks.
Mick Evans.

The Safari uses a processor that is different than the Explorer and the E-Trac (which also have different processors). Recovery speed is a factor of a number of things and the way the signals are processed is also different between the three units.

The Safari is faster in recovery than the Quattro. Beyond that, it makes about as much sense to compare the Safari to the Explorer as asking how the reocvery speed compares to a Whites DFX or Fisher F-75.

Having used all three, the recovery speed issue from the Quattro has been improved on the Safari. The Safari and Explorer need to be slowed down in high trash. The E-Trac does as well but has better see-through capabilities. But I would say that ANY detector has to be slowed way down in high trash to avoid target masking.

In terms of which to compare it to . . . . . no real measureable milestone that is of value is here.

Just an opinion

Andy

Everyone would buy the $1000 machine. The industry has always done this. I don't expect the Safari to be as fast as my SE which ain't no fast machine. You can bet I will know how fast it is when I take both out to my Yard and my small garden. I have overhead power lines, a big fat noisy transformer about 60 feet from the Garden and two air conditioners running and Moderate salt salinity sulphur based dirt and one deep dime buried 9"s down on edge that every machine I have must hit or it don't stay. It does not take me long to figure out if it is going to be a keeper or not. Then it goes straight to the trash and the Iron trash to see how it really hunts. Any machine can hunt in moderate dirt and minimal amount of trash. The test of a good machine and coils are the iron trash and the real bad aluminum mixed trash. I bring my flags and some different machines and I start testing. Then it goes to the salt and fresh water mix black sand beaches I hunt on.

I know you would never ever believe that the speed of the processor and coil size don't matter in the iron trash and the iron or even normal trash hunting. Sure you have to slow down but the speed of the processor and how it separates the targets does matter and that is the way it is.

I bought the Safari because they say it has a improved processor. Now that could mean faster or that could mean better at separating targets. I bought it also for the new coil as I have a lot of different coils I can use on the Safari and I can use the new coil on my SE along with the SEF 10X12" coil. I also bought the Safari because I can program the different hunting modes to my liking and have them at a just push of a button.

A faster Processor then the SE or the E Track, not on your life. The $$$$$$$ are what mater and you get what you pay for. I did not mean to try and steal your thread I just had something to say about these comments. If you come here to hunt you better have a machine that will go 8+"s or you can just go home and get you self a different hobby. HH :D: :D: Jerry aka Tinfoil

Yep. Price has a lot to do with things.
I read one of Andy's posts regarding JW asking the same question that I asked. it seems that the processor is only slightly faster, but things have been improved through the software. I should have used the Quattro as the benchmark. As this seems to be the main feature that has improved on the new model, it would be interesting to know by what percentage it has improved over the previous model. after all, that was the focus of what Minelab has set out to do. I think that Andy is really trying to say though, that it's how it handles the ground better, rather than it's speed that is where the Safari is a better detector. So here we are, trying to get our head around what the improvements are by using basic ball park yard sticks, and Andy seems to be saying that it's a bit more complicated (vague) than that.
I agree with you on the need to slow down. When using my old XS Explorer, I have on occasion been as slow as a 10 second pass in each direction, when the ground gets trashy. The detector tells you how fast you can swing. I'm only just starting to get a handle on the XS, but it seems that the poor old thing is on it's last legs. I just hope that it will last a while longer. When it dies, I'll give the Safari or the Se the nod. I checked out the E-Trac and as our gold coins are right in the middle of screw cap range, the new arrangement of putting all of these targets on 11 and 12, is a real deal breaker for me.

Will let you know what I think. Man I love playing with a new toy and compairing them to the others that I have. Been playing with them for over 22 years now and have loved every minute. :D: :D: HH Jerry aka Tinfoil

but that wasn't the case. The Q is currently my last choice when hunting in trashy sites. Is Minelab going to offer a software upgrade or "fix" so we can upgrade the Quattro speed to equal the Safari or the Explorer?
I still use my Q but unless I am on the beach, the sunray X5 coil helps on target separation so the audio responses of the first target doesn't get dragged over the other nearby targets.

Go to the post (Upgrades) below with the 1/11/08 date, Ratman asked the same question and Andy replied that he didn't think it would happen.

I put it in the iron machinegun trash the screen just went blank in all metal no ID no tones no nothing with the 11 coil on. Changed over to the 6" excellerator started to get some tones no ID just froze up and could not pull anything out of the trash. Recovery speed on the Safari in my garden is about or I want to say the same as the SE. Tones will seperate but the ID's don't change on a sweep speed just like the SE. As long as the tones change that is OK with me. No trash in my garden just a 9" on edge dime and a 6" nickle on edge some close together surface coins, that is all I really need just to do a garden test. Took it to the salt/freshwater beach all metal a waste of time even with the 6" excellerator coil on tones and ID usless. This is a trashy beach but my SE works great. So now I am thinking There is something wrong with the Safari. My SE just walks all over the Safari in the trash and the iron trash and at the beach. ID and high tones just jumps all over the place on the Safari and the targets hit high tone seems like on the edge of the coil makes you think it is a piece of iron when you are in ferrious mode, or conductive mode, till you get it pinpointed and narrowed down then it is a little better.. This Gumbo Dirt down here is hard as a brick and just can't dig down for some of the deep targets and the depth on the Safari, so far you can't belive it. So I ain't happy and it is going to go on a road trip in a few more days to M/L. Just got to write down the weird stuff it is doing. Sorry guys I wish I could give you more but till I get a good one that is all I can do for you. Just not reliable when you get into the trash like my SE. I know this machine is not a SE and I did a hell of a lot of coil switching and testing in the few hours I got on it. You don't see anybody else saying anything. I just think this one is sort of broke when you get in the trash. I ran auto , ran the sensitivity up and down varied the sweep speed up and down high low trash desity but high density is the trash. On a deep target it does like a faster sweep speed in High Density. OK so far not so good. Should get a lot of hits on this one with no comments just like always. HH Jerry aka Tinfoil.

I think I will hunt it in Relic and coin Jewelry as they are pretty close in there Discrimination patterns. Only one Dis. # off. Hunting just coins is out of the question as I don't hunt just coins. I think I will play around all week as I have to have more Info. when I send it back to M/L anyway. Hey, maybe that is the way it hunts. "NOT" :D: :D: . I know from just reading the E-Track Posts that they have to be running patterns and high trash Density. Think I will cross save the Coin jewelry to the Relic mode and dis out #40. See if that will cut out the screaming high tone. 10 hours just is not enough time. It don't take me long to know if one is messed up though. Perfecting one to really hunt, now that is a very different story. It takes hundreds of hours hunting with one to really get the hang of it. I put over 30 days straight on the F75 hunting a Black Sand Salt Water Beach in All Metal just to prove that it would hunt and you could get 10+"s on targets. Hunting that beach is Dis. on the f75 was out of the question period. It paid off too as I paid for it twice over in that 30 days just with the Gold and Diamond Ring I got.

That post was just to really let you know what troubles I was running into and to let you guys know what I thought about the Recovery Speed and ID compared to my SE. OK back out of here and Lurking. Waiting for some more of the new Safari Owners to Post. Oh BTW anyone want to tell me how there new Machine is working in the Iron Trash and the beach. Maybe I will try to get it to hunt like a E-Track. Maybe someone will say something stupid like it ain't a SE. :D: :D: HH Later, Jerry aka Tinfoil

not an E-Trac! Sorry about that; I couldn't resist.
I hope you get the Safari fixed soon. hopefully it's only something real simple.
Mick Evans.

I WILL BE GETTING MY SAFARI WEDNESDAY I WILL GIVE IT A TEST AT SOME OLD CELLAR HOLES SEE IF ITS AS GOOD AS MY T2 IN IRON. KEEP YOU POSTED.:detecting:

Heya Tinfoil, thanks for your time and effort, you da man. Something must be wrong with it since it was in a capable persons hands as yourself. Hopefully someone else will give us a good post on it and you have something to compare.
Ill keep hanging with the Pro for a bit longer.
Thanks
John
