Same question I asked on the Explorer forum...........with added questions here.

Minelab XS older model, or a new Safari for overall finds ??The Safari sure seems to like iron a lot.. Will Low density mode solve any of that issue ?? Will a different coil solve it ??

To be honest on depth...I am not seeing where the Safari is as deep as an SE pro..let alone a E-trac........... Now this could be operator error ( ME) LOL..so if you have time give me a good post on how to use the Safari swing speed etc.. settings ?? though, their isn't all that many on the machine........ 4 preset and 4 you can set up..Please explain the auto versus the self adjusted depth settings..which actually works better lower self set, or auto that may or may not be set high in the area your detecting. I'm not totally ready to quit on this machine yet..but I'm not seeing much reason to keep it either.........

as being pretty dang proficient with it too.. With that being said, a full seson using the safari, I had gone back over the same areas that I had thought I'd beat to death with the explorer ( and others too ) and just couldn't believe how many deep silver coins I had missed.. ( deep being 8-10 inches ).. I still believe the pro coil is a big part of the reason.

Take your time, hunt slow ( which is how I hunt anyway ). I still perfer the target cursur on the xs set up alot better then the numbers of the safari, but it does get the job done... maybe minelab will refine the display of the safari in the near future... that would be reall SWEET !!!

I will try going slower. What kind of numbers you getting on deep Silver. So far all my deep 37 38 hits have been Iron ( Rusted Pieces) of things. I did hit a deep Wheat cent..but the target was all over the place on ID.. Is this one of those dig it all machines ?? Or can you kinda get the Id's to fall in an area you have an Idea of what you might be digging.

Hey Elton,
It will take time to know what the Safari is telling you. From the conversations that I have had with Andy and others, the Safari is the same platform as the Etrac. (with fewer bells and whistles) so it should go as deep. It took me a while to get use to this machine. It was my first so I didn't have an preconceived notions or habits. I have found silver dimes to 8 inches or so. +/- A Barber half at 10-11 inches. Pennies are a pain in the ... coming in about the same as silver for older ones. So far this year I am at about 35 silver. So it does find them. Dug some nails that sounded pretty good today as well.
I know someone else will chime in. Prep has had both machines and sold his Etrac.
Hope this helps a little,
Bunker

The Safari will over compensate in auto sens. and drive sens. too low. For coin hunting I never went below 16 and for relic hunting never below 18. I traded my Safari for an Explorer SE with pro coil. Should have kept the Safari. The SE of course gave alot of info on the display but I liked the tones of the Safari better. The depth seemed the same to me, on coins, but I think the Safari has an edge on minie balls (my opinion). I cross saved conductive tones to the relic mode, so I didn't have to see the icons, set disc to eliminate small foil when coin hunting, and to -7 when relic hunting. I always used High Trash Density. I've been trying out a F75 LTD for the past couple of months and doing pretty good with it, but if I decide it's not for me later on I think I will go back to the Safari...........Oh yeah, the explorer will do the "iron wrap around" with good I.D. just like any other machine, all of this is just my experience with both machines.

I put batteries and went for the first time this year to park that dates back to 1820,Safari with pro coil on maybe long winter and I forgot everything I knew first 5 holes I dug were deep square nails site has had 3 buildings tore down on it loaded with Iron but I have pulled over a hundred silver coins from this site in 30 years.I had to give up and go home the nulling and detecting iron was too bad.I had a simaliar problem at a gravel pit camping area last year so I once again put on 6X8 and went back to same park found 7 wheats and $1:30 in clad Safari worked great, pinpointed great, hunted less than an hour no coins deeper than 5 inches can't wait to go back I have hunted this park with about 7 different brands of detectors through the years there should have been no wheats left.I have found silver and nickel 3 cent coins, and half dimes at this site in the past.1820 was town well 20 feet around,1830 had church on site torn down 1857 to 2000 Masonic Hall park is only 300 by 300 feet. The weather really has gotten bad again here in the Nothern Republic Commie State of Illinois will try Pro Coil again in cleaner area make sure it is working alright.

Press coin and after it comes up press relic and hold the button down until SAVED appears on the screen. That should give you conductive tones in the relic mode. I am not sure I understand your problem with iron use the reject/accept button and get rid of what you don't want to deal with. HH :minelab:

in my area are usually always a coin hit ( and most likely silver to boot )... Are you certain your not getting a neg number while sweeping across the target from different directions??? A high tone beep with a neg number showing has always been a piece of iron, like part of a square nail.....37-38 readings no matter which way you sweep, look for that silver coin...maybe you left in in the hole??

Good luck.. Mark ( ohio )

Safari is id'ing iron as good 38 numbers.same as a Silver dime and sometimes it drops to 37... so I dig expecting a coin, and nope it's iron with nothing else in the hole.. Kinda a real issue for me too. I may be doing something wrong..But can't seem to figure out why it id's the iron as good target..

I wish mark,,but no it's 37 38 good readings..Nothing else is in the hole..I have widened and dug deeper to see that. Plus the signal is gone once iron is removed.

Elton-
Are you noise cancelling after setting any factory or custom mode? The book suggests to do a noise cancel every 30 minutes or so, especially when going from one ground type to another. Keep coil steady, noise cancel over clean area (i keep coil on ground, not several inches above it).
BTW- I always take with me some worn silver, buffalo, IH,wheaties to test and notate their stats in a new location. Granted, they're clean & surface dropped, but the sounds, TID,GID will be fresh in my mind.

No I never did that as far as taking coins..but I sure have noise cancelled it.

A representitive of Minelab. I did not get permission to use their name. So I will not. If they want that known, I'm sure he will respond here.
Minelab is doing everything possible at this point to help me solve the issues. I think that is pretty darn good. I also want to say " I did not contact them..They contacted me"..thats 100% Satisfaction as far as I am concerned. Can't think of many companies that would initiate contact to resolve an issue. Thank you Sir , and thank Minelab too... Pretty Darn Impressive !!

Is noise cancel just another word for GB the unit ?? I thought FBS units picked one frequency for the ground through the processor and all the other frequencies were for detecting the area you were in ?????

I also thought Noise set was for the electrical if any interferences in the area you were hunting. can some of you knowledgeable guys and girls jump in here and set me straight please ???

You need to look at my past posts get Andy's Safari Book. There are 28 freq.but the only time they all are used is when you noise cancel. From the 28 - 11 sets can be selected it will determine from a single what set of 2 or 3 freq you are to use and this set will be the best for you to use either this set is ground balancing or ground balancing is Auto.I have some problems with this this is too much automation and that is why you must noise cancel often it may select a better set as ground conditions change. The whole system works pretty good but but I have thought at times they minelab are on the edge of false advertising claiming 28 freq fooled me..Also if you are in an area of high electrical interferance does the detector pick the set due to ground conditions or electrical. That is why the Xterra 705 can out perform the ETrac,SE,Safari in certain conditions you can do more things manually to get more depth and find gold better by changing coil freq you know where you are at.Saying all that the Safari system works pretty good just remember that you might be better to noise cancel away from power line and work your way under them. When you are hunting plowed field and the soil turns from black to clay you need to noise cancel you will not believe how many coins I have found that others missed because they did not ground balance again or noise cancel. There is more you can do by fooling the coil to change freq and seeing what freq you are using by freq counter but I have seen no real benifit for doing this it is what it is.

Once switched to proper mode all worked much much better.
