Sat's odd an end finds

Mark in S.E. IA

New member
Sat I took one of my looooong road trips to check out older schools and parks. The first place I MDed at I found a Merc, a wheat's, 2 pieces of play money, a motorcycle pin "not silver" and a bracelet. Somebody had MDed this place in the past few weeks because their was some plugs there. One of the plugs I swung over I picked up a trash signal so I figured he left his trash in the hole. Another time I swung over one of his old plugs and I got a nice high tone and it sounded good enough for me to check it out. I PPed right in the center of his plug so I just took out the old plug and then took out all the loose dirt down to about 12" and didn't find the target. so I did some more checking and if seem like it might be off to the side of the plug and it was, 3" over and it was the bracelet, which is just junk. He must of lost the signal and gave up on it, who knows. I also found the Lion's pin there and it's for,,, A 100% attendance, 57-58.

Then the next 3 places I checked out I didn't find anything good and a couple of them had plugs so I was in a area that had a guy that was active at MDing. The last place I was at I found all the other things in the pictures and the last place had some plugs there too.

The cross is marked Sterling but I don't think it's silver, it's way too shiney for silver that come out of the ground and it just don't look like silver.

I didn't find much for old coins but I did find some nice odds n ends.

Nice finds! I always like finding old tokens.

I would think the cross is sterling 9.25 it dosen't shine as much as the merc. at 9.0 If silver stays under water for a long time it will turn black.

Now that I look at the picture the cross looks dark but it looks shiney otherwise, almost like chrome.

Not your usual eye popping finds....but always entertaining. Is the cross magnetic??
You would think that the all American game of baseball could at least get their tokens...MADE IN AMERICA!!!!

I see you noticed that it was made in china

Like jarrow mentioned, if silver has been wet for a while it will turn black. That's because of a build up of silver sulfide. You may want to try the trick of using foil and baking soda with boiling hot water to remove the silver sulfide, if that's what it is. I doubt that you will damage the cross if it's not silver. Often times you'll have to wipe away the silver sulfide if it's badly tarnished.

Here is a Morgan dollar that I did that to the other day. It was the most tarnished silver that I've ever seen. It actually looks even better in person than the after picture shows.

I know it looks dark in the picture but it's really shiney like chrome and it does not stick to a magnetic.

Nice finds. Especially the tokens even if they are Chinese made.
