14 years of hunting and this is my first scratch coin I actually felt a little sick after it happened. It was in a frozen clump of dirt and the lesche got away from me. I would of been devastated if this was my only V nickle but I have found others. The good news was my wife was hunting about twenty yards away when I yelled " I just did something stupid" she comes over detector in hand to look at the scratch and stops five feet from me and says " Wo whats this" two minutes later shes holding a barber dime are second Barber coin this weekend, so there was a silver lining, literally. And the scratch just went through the patina so I guess I could rebury it for a few years and darken up the scratch but I will probably just leave it, lesson learned. Thanks for lookin.

Scratched V nickle leads to another Barber

It's really hard not to hit the find now and then in frozen ground !
You've been in this hobby a lot longer than me but here's something I've found that helps "repair" scratched coins - if your OK with it.
Get a small container - I use one of the plastic spice bottles - put a few ounces of White Vinegar in it - add a spoon or two of table salt - shake it up - throw the V=Nickel in - leave the coin soaking in the salt and vinegar solution for about 10 to 15 min. - take the coin out - and clean it up with a very fine steel wool - just keep going in circles with the steel wool - the coins clean and from what I've seen several times - the scratch from the digger is no longer visible at all - or at least it's a lot harder to see !
