SE and E-Trac owners ---- E-Trac and Iron

Anyone who owns / owned both machines..........

Did you notice that the E-Trac falses more than the SE?

Does it seem to be more of an "iron magnet" than the SE?

I think they give false signals on deep rusted iron about the same, but the E-Trac seems to be easier to tell when it is a false iron signal.

I change my tone variance to max(30) so iron tends to give a very high tink tone. Also when pinpointing iron will pinpoint just slightly off to the side from where the motion tone originates. Between those two tests I do very well at avoiding the false iron signals.

the guys that are saying that don't have their machines set up correctly.

Have you heard of any E-Trac defects that make those faulty machines iron magnets and / or is there a way to tell right away if the machine isn't acting correctly?

Only a lack of understanding. When I first got my E-Trac, and my SE for that fact, I dug a lot of iron that I thought sounded just like a good deep coin. At that point I would have thought it a "iron magnet" myself. Now that I've adjusted my tone variance and learned to spot the signs of iron, I don't dig much at all. In fact I can't remember the last time I dug a piece of iron.

That may not sound like much, but I mainly hunt our 125 year old city park that is full of iron nails and junk from years of buildings being torn down. Lots of false signals.

I hunt a lot of trashy ground with my SE and I've had good luck but, it sounds like the E-Trac might be more stable and "hear" better through the trash than the SE does.

Most defective detectors are found to have issues with-in the first several trips out........

Most of the issues that we have noticed are the detectors are giving an over voltage, or going crazy.

Regards

In his book, Andy says to set variability at 29 instead of 30 to reduce falsing. At some iron rich/trashy sites he recommends lowering it more to reduce falsing even more. I just read this last evening. I usually hunt with variability at 30. I'm going to lower it to 28.

Thanks Joe! The probe I bought from you almost 4 years ago is still going strong!!!

I tried this last night and didn't notice any anything other than iron sounded more like coins. I set it at 28 and still got a lot of iron false signals, just a little lower tones.
