SE BreakDown

I have had my Explorer SE for about 2 years.Great machine!Since I recieved it tho if i use the backlight at all the screen will split in half down the center. Its done this right out of the box.It works fine if i dont use the backlight so i just kept the light off.Lately tho the machine tends to be unstable at my normal sens at sites ive hunted before. The cursor is hoping around alot.So i decided i better send her in to be looked at.I was abit shocked it cost me $110 bucks for UPS ground with insurance. Its been less than 24 hours and im going thru withdrawls alrdy hehe.Im gonna have to use the GTI 2500 till its back.Have any of you folks ran into this prob with the backlight and screen spliting???

That shipping charge does seem very excessive. You could have sent it registered or insured with the post office for less. Did you take it to a shipping store and have them box it for you?

I have heard of the split screen problem, but I have not experienced it and do not remember what others have done to remedy it.

Sent my SE back about 2 weeks ago 2nd air from Southern Illinois was $52. I got it back all fixed up exactly one week after they got it.

Ive had unstability before never a split screen. Normally its a battery or one of the connections. I clean and run the battery down and recharge it. Then take all the connections loose... the last time it seemed it was the one on the upper shaft. I have found you really need to keep those coil covers clean because it doesnt take much to disturb the GB.

Do you still use the slim coil? Becuase that is the problem with my se right now. It's 2 1/2 yrs old. and you got rip off on shipping. I had my screen split one time when i first got it but it has not done it again.

Sounds like one or two day air prices to me.......no way should it have cost that much for UPS Ground. Actually, I'm a little surprised that you didn't send it back with that backlight issue....that type of thing means that the circuit board is  and I would have no faith in any of the functions of the detector. I have a GTI 2500 too that I bought before my first XS -- just out of curosity what sort of depthdo you get? I never got more than 5 or 6". with it.

Did you send the control head in. or the whole machine??? $110.00??? for shipping,, WHEW!!!!
I sent my Sov. Elite control box in last week Priority mail it was $5.75.
Something is wrong with that picture.
I got some beach front property in Arizona I'll sell you:blink::devil::hot:

I have never gotten more than 7 or 8 inches on a coin with the 2500.The target id is also only good for 6 inches. It cost me 30 bucks to box the detector,60 bucks for insurance the rest to ship...I got screwed for sure.I only sent the control unit and the coil,no battery or shaft.I went to the UPS store ,I didnt have a box or packaging.Live and learn i guess(dammit!!!)Few less dollars towards my E-Trac :( The detector screws up with any of my 4 coils.I have cleaned between the coil covers also.I didnt wanna ship the detector without insurance which was the biggest cost.Next time i will know better.Thx guys

funny.......this happened to me today. i turned it on and since i was indoors doing some adjustments i put the backlight on and with in a minute or two the bloody screen split in two!!! it freaked me out so i turned it off for a few minutes. i put the back light on and BAM!!! split screen again. is this something i should concern myself with or what? please....if anyone has any feedback on this let me know.
shipping isn't an issue for me.....i run the shipping dept. at my work..........thank goodness for that!
just to be sure, im gonna call minelab tomorrow and see what they say about this. im not sure if i want a corporate answer to my question from them but we will see. thanks everybody:surrender:

Bryce, so might this explain my difficulties finding stuff in areas i know are plentyfull? because the guys i hunt with all find shallow and deep targets in spots i just went over. i know i didnt get a hit then they walk behind me and hit silver or a wheat. im blaming the 6x8 sef so i change to a 7.5 coil and same thing.:help:
im the only one using an explorer........OMG , im getting beat by a Garret for pete's sake.........
it just seems unstable no matter the setting and my readings (FE/CO)change alot also. sometimes the reading will show a possible penny(wheat) but then ill go over it again and the reading has changed. ill dig it anyway...and well it was a penny but with way different readings.
im called minelab and im waiting for a call back from tech support.

I was hit from "both ends" so to speak...when I got my new SE. It took me forever to figure out what was going on because my control box was bad as well as the coil:ranting:
I sent it in and they completely replaced my control box. It did improve a lot...but still went batty from time to time as I explained in the link.
I then realized I had a crummy coil after weeks of more frustration...so minelab sent me a new one.
Finally after receiving new "guts" and a new "bottom end"...I started rockin' and rollin' with the SE....and never looked back.

thanks Bryce.........i really hope minelab can help me out, even though my machine is older. it came with your favorite coil so:poke::poke: it may have been the same batch as yours when you had trouble.

This thing happened to me not to long ago, I was having problems with the detector going crazy off and on thought my hunts. I had read of people having these problems so I contacted Minelab and they said to send it in so I did. ( Cost me about 60.00 to ship also) anyway after a few weeks I got a call from the Minelab tech and he wanted to know the trouble I had been having. I told him ,he then said he was having trouble producing the same sounds. I told him that it didn't always happen. He then proceeded to tell me that the only thing he could see wrong was that I had my Gain set to high at 30, I said really? he then apparently put the gain all the way up to 30 and I could hear the detector start going crazy, so I said well that sounds exactly like what it was doing. Problem solved right? well when I got off the phone I started thinking the gain only goes to 10 so how could I have it set to 30. Well I figured he must have been talking about the sensitivity which I do sometimes adjust depending on where I am hunting. So I got my detector back and you guessed it no matter where I have my sensitivity set at the detector still does the same thing. I plan to take video next time I am out and sent it to the tech so they can determine if I have a problem. This is about the 5Th or 6Th person I have heard that had the same problems, don't you think that the tech's would be aware of it. I don't want to send my machine in again, I missed it for the month it was gone so I will wait till winter I guess.

Was that just getting the machine there ??....you say it's only been twenty four hours so it has not been fixed and returned. You could have more expense ??????????????????????? I sent a detector out to the coast not long ago insured..and it was only $30 something dollars.. You sure they didn't make an error in your billing..??????? The post office would have been less than that and their expensive..
