SE came in today via UPS, I can not wait

Good evening all, I hope everyone is well. I have longed for a metal detector for many years and now I have purchased my first in the Minelab Explorer SE. I was hoping to reach out and get tips and suggestions from current users. I would appreciate any suggestions in using this machine that you would care to pass along. Posting this will be fun while I am reading the manual. One thing I did notice prior to reading anything is that there is a constant sound coming from the machine when I turn it on each time. I am sure that the manual will tell me how to tune the machine properly however I look forward to contributing to the forum.

Hi, I just got mine last wed. It is my 3rd Explorer( XS, II, and SE). The constant noise is your threshold. There is a down arrow next to it you can turn it down gradually. The next thing you want to do is go into the menu and then "OPTIONS". Next you will want to hit "RECOVERY", then hit both "FAST" and "DEEP". Then hit "DETECT" and you're on your way to mega-coins

Rob,

Thank you! I should do a brief intro to the group. My name is Jon and my lovely wife Jessica allowed me to purchase this machine for our 9th wedding ann (today). I live in Olathe Kansas and have researched several great stories in the local area (Kansas City KS & MO). This weekend I plan on becoming one with the machine and learning all I can learn about it. Earlier in the week I took the opportunity to get permission to hunt several old 1880 homes in the area and I can not wait, I may be sick on Friday, he he. I am 33 and new to the hobby however I am a real history buff and I can tell this hobby is going to get into my blood and provide hours of fun and discovery for my sons and I.

Thank you again for your helpful suggestion Rob!

I forgot to mention, the coils that were purchased as well.

FBS Slimline that came with the machine.

Excelerator EQ 2 pro 5"

Excelerator EQ2 pro 11x14"

Thoughts or suggestions on use would be appriciated as well.

Hi kcbeerguy. The best thing to do is play around with the SE for a while and then start asking questions. There is much experience on this forum. Tap in.GR

Thank you for the suggestions GR, right now I am just making it through the manual and enjoying reading the posts. This is a great forum.

I have about 3 months into the SE, That manual your trying to study wont help you a bit or I should say it did not help me. You need to get the ferrous and conductivity charts off this forum, I think someone just posted one. There's also a good download of a practice mock SE thats just like the real thing for your computer and Snowy posted some add-ons for it last week. I don't know why it doesn't come with the machine. If you PM me with your email I can send you some good links that DFX-Gregg was kind enough to send me, and it has helped me tremendously. I can finally look at the numbers and have a pretty good idea what i am going to be digging up now.
My name is Aaron and I live in Washington state, I will be watching for your first pictures of all your cool finds. All I have found is clad coins and no silvers so far but the day will come when I post a picture of my first silver or maybe even a gold ring. Good Luck and Happy hunting:wave:

And charge it according to directions. The first time charging is the longest.

Bury some coins in the back yard, some at 4" some at 5" some 6" some 7" on down to 10".
Bury some coins with an iron nail about an inch or two away from it and see what it takes to get that coin to hit.
Bury some other junk near a coin and see what it takes to hit it or note how the detector sees both.

Play with your sens setting until you can hit the deeper coins (caution: the Explorer does not like freshly dug soil so it might take some time to hear the deepest ones you buried.)

Once you've got your battery really charged put it in.
Hit Power.
Adjust the threshold on the far right so you just barely hear it. You want some threshold.

throw some coins on the ground separated about a foot and see where they hit.
Most of all, enjoy the greatest machine God gave to man (so far).
Once you are comfortable with your machine go to your Iron Mask and move the dark matter over until there is not too much and your machine will be an even faster machine to detect in iron trash. If you are really brave and really know your machine have zero iron masking (all white) and you will hear everything. But first get used to the machine.

Attaboy, you got a great machine. Put your time in playing with it, I think it is easily learned. Dont allow yourself to start doubting your decision on machines especially as a beginner, you have the best machine made, it will definitely find you the goodies. Let us know how that 5" coil works, I am interested in gettin one myself.

When I got mine I had already spent days playing with the Explorer emulator on my computer, and read the manual 8 or 10 ten times and practiced all kinds of programing functions on the emulator. I had also watched the Exploring the Explorer videos on YouTube. So when my machine arrived I felt confident and headed out to a park that I was very familiar with.
That's when the train wreck happened. As I listened to the multitude of tones which came in a mixture of staccato chirps and toots and hums, I was lost. Looking at the screen in either Smartfind or Digital made no difference. I had no idea what I was looking at in either one. Frustrated, I came home and logged on to this forum and posted my experiences for the day and continued to read, read, read.
The next time I went to the park I made two big changes to my machine. I programed it according the Mike Moutray parameters that can be found on this forum using the search feature, and I switched to a smaller coil. I have 3 coils including a Sunray X-5 but I switched to an Excelerator 4X7. Man what a difference!!! The machine calmed down a LOT, and I was able to pick out targets and pinpoint. At first I dug everything, regardless of the pitch and whether the tone was smooth or broken. Shallow targets can give a broken tone even thought they are good targets. I learned to look at the depth indicator as well as the cursor on the Smartfind, and with practice it helps to tell if a coin is a recent drop or has been there for a while. I still can't use the Digital Screen. I try, but I think I will end up being one of the guys that hunts in Smartfind.
By the third or fourth time you take it out you should be digging a lot less trash and be switching coils to see how they perform. In the paperwork you get with the machine is a little fold-up plastic coated paper diagram of the Explorer menu. Take it along for quick reference, but try not to play with the settings too much until you the hang of it.
Good hunting,
Toy4runr

Be patient with the machine. It does take sometime learning what the machine is capable of doing. Try not to get to discouraged with it. You need to wear out a few sets of batteries before you start to feel comfortable with it. I am going on 3+ years on an EX II and am still learning it. Best of luck with your new SE. You got yourself the best!
