Se-With pro 11" coil...............

How long is the average for learning this detector. I know presets are in order for a while.

Truth is I am missing my Fisher F75..Not meant as an argument factor...It was comfortable, it was deep, and it worked like a regular detector. "The Se even just testing it for results", is very different.. I'm just not loving it.

With my attitude as it stands should I trade it off for another F75, or try to learn it..... I am being serious here..not a joke..I want to like the Se ..but.. ?????????????

Elton,you have cabin fever,give yourself a couple of months in the field once the weather breaks.The Explorer is the unit you need for those parks that aren't producing in your area.Once you dig a couple of seated coins she won't look so ugly.This is just my humble opinion.

I agree, I have only been using my SE for a few months and it is a great machine. my suggestion is to leave it on factory settings and you will notice a huge difference.

Hang in there bud,,,, When i first received my SE,, I HATED it!!!! The tones were different,,, i thought it was heavy,,,, And i made noises i never heard before!!!! After a couple months of using it,,, And after going to a "hunted out park" and digging a 1850 Half Dime,,,,,
silver dimes and wheat Penny's 9 and 10 inches deep i started to love it!!! Just hang in there,,, let the snow go away and give it some more time,,, Run the factory coin setting,,, Or make it a little tighter,,, I made my own pattern for the first 6 months and found great stuff,,, I took all the main coins i wanted to find.. Dollars, Half Dollars, Quarters, Dimes, Nickels and Penny's. Went to learn mode.. Totally blacked out the screen.. Then took each item and ran it under the coil, to make my own pattern,,,,,, That really helped learn the machine,,,, After a while I switched to factory coin mode , and my finds started increasing,,, Today i run my iron mask pretty wide open,, And my finds have really increased.. If you have any questions just ask bud... Just hang on to it a little longer,,, At the end if you dont like it..., Trade it for your Fishers,,, The Explorer definitely isn't for everyone!!!!!!! few months I had it...and I'm as serious as I can be. When I met GOLDDIGGER at Forest Park in St. Louis for the first time...he will verify the fact that I kept putting my then "new" SE back in my car...opting for "old faithful"...the cz70pro with the 12" Sunray coil on it. To me...the SE even sounded different than my EX2...which I sold to get the new SE.
The 1904 World's Fair pavillion hill at Forest Park.... to this day is the most trash infested site I've ever hunted. You talk about frustration....my SE sounded like an intoxicated alien...and it drove me nuts...hence switching back to the cz70pro.
Towards the end of the day though...after seeing Jim work the 6" Excelerator coil through the trash....I slowly but surely stuck with the SE. It was also then that I realized just how truly slow one needs to go in order for the SE to work it's magic.
Jim also opened my eyes that day to why conductive sounds with some iron mask was the way to go at these trashy parks. It just wasn't...and isn't feasible to want to listen to every grunt and sound in the ground at these sites. It just simply is not possible.
That day...Jim told me the settings he and Mike Moutray were using...and while they varied somewhat...they were the same at base level...conductive sounds with some iron mask...which I was already using on my SE...so I knew I was headed in the right direction. I spent the next 2 years with those settings as my base...while fine tuning...changing...experimenting...and honing in certain settings changes which made the SE "click" for me....and sound off over deep silver.
I think one of the biggest discoveries I made learning my SE the last couple of years...was the fact that it WILL sound off over deep silver while nulling. That goes against everything I read...heard...and was told or taught. I was always told I had to have my iron mask more open or it would null too much and not signal over silver. Well...I'll tell you what...if that's the case...then I need to throw around 40 siilver coins back that I found this year in a complete dead null.
I discoverd this using the settings I use.....and anyone I've hunted with will varify the following fact....with my iron mask open even one more number....deep nails start to sound too good. With the iron mask setting closed even one more number...the SE will not sound off over deep silver while in a null.
My point to all this gibberish is....don't quit...keep the settings basic for now....then begin to "play" with settings only after you have familiarized yourself with the SE. The little tricks I mentioned that work for me...and my buddies who I've helped...will be meaningless to you as a new SE user...since you haven't familiarized yourself just yet with the lingo the SE is speaking.
In time...you'll see there are a lot of different ways to set up the SE to find deep goodies with. I just found a way to make it work for ME. The key will be for you to find a way to make it work for YOU. If my settings help you out...great. If you like somebody else's settings better...and they work for you...great as well. Give it some time my friend...and the foreign language it speaks to you in...will soon turn into the sound of deep silver....but it will take some time.

Elton,watch the Explorer videos on you tube.The Explorer is very simple to use,but can be tweaked later for different conditions.My biggest problem right now is cabin fever.Your SE is like money in the bank.Even after a couple of months use this spring ti will still resale for enough cash to purchase a F75.Bill Ladd will still let us on the Fisher Forum without a F75.Besides that Bill may have an Explorer stashed somewhere in his equipment.

The best detector is the one you know how to use Elton, BUT, give the SE Pro the needed time to learn it's language. Picking up any new language takes time and it took me a couple of months of constant use but I was pretty familiar with it before even having one. It took me over a year to learn the DFX, so it could be worse....

All of these users of the Explorer can't be wrong and committing to learning the SE will be time well spent IMHO.

I have been working with your settings and air testing many many objects and coins..It is frustrating... The tones and the ID area chages with almost every pass of the target under the coil...Slow down, one reading. Speed up, another reading..You know what I mean I am sure. Nothing is really ever the same as you change Sens, areas, etc... Frustrating to learn. Thanks Bro..your the best.

Just like most other's here, I didn't like the SE at all when I first got it and even several months into it. The sounds were obnoxious and literally gave me a headache. My problem was that I was told to only use manual sensitivity and I ran it too high which made learning the thing simply annoying and/or impossible. I took Bryce's advice and switched back to auto and the noises have decreased, while my depths of recovery have increased. It's also important to slow your sweep speed way down. I understand the f75 is a very light machine, and I used a DFX before the SE which was also quite a bit lighter and demanded a faster sweep. The SE loves a slow, focused, well-controlled, concentrated sweep. That'll make it easier to learn and the deeper stuff will start showing up. For me, the optimal sweep speed is about a second per foot.

I too was just having probelms with all the noise, and nothing consistant on the meters..Jumps everywhere while trying to learn sweep speed etc...

Hi Elton!! I hear ya on gettin frustrated with the SE. I was the same way in the beginning. When I first started, I tried it with discrimination and high sensitivity. I have since, with some advice from here, turned to all metal with ferrous sounds and a bit lower sensitivity in the trash and feel that I am getting more targets deeper. It is a lot of noise at first but your ears kinda get used to it and it will be like a second threshold or something, you can hear it but you dont hear it if you know what I mean. You will quickly learn the good sounds amidst the iron rumbles and will start diggin some good targets with junk on or around them. I may be missing out on something by not using discrimation but I tried this and it stuck so you might give it a go before you give up on it!

Don't start with the stock coin program or run in Iron Mask or all the sounds will drive you nuts. Run in Auto Sensitivity & Conductive Sounds. Black out the screen in Edit mode and open a 1/2" x 1/2" square in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. Dig all repeatable targets - ignore targets whose sound changes pitch or only repeat in one direction - 99% of them are junk despite what the "experts" say. Run in this pattern for a few months until you get a "feel" for the sounds then start opening up more of the screen with Iron Mask as you get more experience. I started with a Garrett 2500 and when I got the Explorer XS I didn't like it at all until I "tamed the beast" using this technique. This will make a HUGE difference.

This is the only way to start for a new user as far as I'm concerned - it used to be mentioned quite often on the forum back when we all first got our Explorers ca 2000 or so, but it's not mentioned that often these days for some odd reason. In trashy areas the unit will null often, but it doesn't matter, the good targets will come through and you'll be amazed at how much you will find and how easy it is to start this way. The only caveat will be that nickels will be masked out - but you can always go back later in Iron Mask mode and get the stuff you missed the first time - small price to pay for getting to really know the machine in the short term. Good luck with it and let me know how this technique works for you!
