SEF 12 x 15 and Doc's Swingy Thingy make a perfect combination for relic hunting

As it is snowing like crazy:ranting: here in MO today after being over 70 degrees and sunny yesterday I have time to post my test results.I went back out earlier this week for several hours to my burned town CW site and waited to give my 12 x15 a workout or should that be the other way around with the weight of said coil.I had been hunting several weeks ago with the Guvner and noticed how nice his swingy thingy was working but never felt the need for it until I got the SEF 12x15 and noticed my shoulder getting sore after a few hours use.

Anyway I got one and after only a few minuets had it installed on me and my E-Trac and all I can say is WOW! NO more Mr. Macho, I am still young and can hunt just fine on my own for me.It made the extra weight of the 12x15 disappear along with most of the machines weight. It worked well in the brush as well as the open.I thought it might get in the way in the overgrown brushy area that make up most of this site but my fears were unwarranted.
If you have been thinking about trying a bungee system you need to get one of Doc's and give your back and shoulder some relief not to mention it could save you some issues down the road if you are still a youngster like I am at 45 .
Well enough about that and on to the performance of the beast as I like to think of my 12x15.First of all it is very quiet at higher sensitivity just like it's two little brothers and hits hard on smaller items like little pieces of lead and rivets and even the tiny rivet washers. It will cover a lot of ground in a hurry and with it's ability to hit tiny lead it should be great on the beaches.
I set my E-Trac up with manual sensitivity as high as would run stable at 27-30 depending on how heavy the cut nail were.I was in ferrous two tones with wide open screen as in all metal no discrimination at all.It works like a charm with the carpet of nails from over forty building that were burned in 1863 and scattered around as part of the area was farmed many years ago and then let grow up in brush the last 30 years or so.It is unreal how I could pick out a high tone blip in the solid iron grunts and then do the Minelab wiggle and get a nice solid high tone lock on some very small conductive targets.
I would have expected this with a small coil but not with the big 12"x15".I dug a lot of targets and none of the nails were a problem at all.Running this way you can tell when you hit bigger pieces of iron as the grunt is either longer or you get a broken high tone and hit pinpoint and it becomes obvious.I dug several bigger iron items out of curiosity and found several pieces of cast iron pots and the smaller items pictured along with a nice Keen Kutter axe that had been burned.I also found two very nice three ringers that I gave to the land owner along with a nice flat button that are not pictured.

One of the nicest things about this long hunt was the fact that I was not wore out at the end of the day thanks to Doc and his neat little invention,Ray.

Yes it is a pocket knife with most of the bone still on the handle and I am sure it is 1860s era or earlier.I need to clean it up a bit and see what it looks like,Ray.

Glad to hear about the luck with the swingy/12x15...but that snow can stay up that way..LOL

I'll have to check on that bungee though, I like the 12x15 but you can only switch arms so many times.
good read

Nice hunting, Ray. I also have the Swingy Thingy. It came in handy last year when my detector swinging arm had a bad case of tendonitis.
