SEF Coils For The T2

Anyone give them a test drive? I had one for the MXT once and to me, it just gave me more coverage, not depth...............MO

I purchased the 18" SEF for my T2. The weight of the coil throws the balance off dramatically. I'm spoiled to the stock coil where I can hunt all day. I can't get it to ground balance by pumping the coil even in clean ground. There is more coverage per sweep but in a semi trashy area it's easy to have multiple targets under the coil. Pinpointing is not a problem after some practice. I don't see any increase in depth. I searched an old church with the stock coil and found 63 coins at depths to 6 inches. I went over the same ground with the SEF and found 3 coins but all were shallow, less than 2", and were probably missed on the first run with the stock coil. I can see where hunting large areas the extra size would be a benefit as you can cover alot of ground quickly but the extra depth advertised hasn't shown to be true. If I had it to do over I would have bought the 5" coil and saved some bucks.

I wonder if with the SEF coil, the way to use it would be to have the sensitivity all the way up and discrim at 0? It just seems like you would need to max the transmit power to get any extra depth (as the coverage areas is larger). Sounds like the overdrive mod I've heard about on the T2 is what would be needed.

Could be, I'll give it a try. I normally run pretty hot on sens but higher disc. I'll drop the disc to 5, I believe this is the first boost on the T2

I don't have the 5" for my T[sup]2[/sup] but I love the 5" on my Omega! Those I know who use the 5" DD on both of these models absolutely admire the excellent weight/balance, and are impressed but the depth achieved with the 5" DD. I know I really am with the Omega w/5".

I've used many of the Detech coils, to include a few SEF's. They work, but they are heavy, especially with a great-feeling T[sup]2[/sup]. I haven't found a combination that surpasses the T[sup]2[/sup] w/stock 11" BiAxial DD coil. It's virtually "the perfect" match.

Sounds like the 5" coil will be the best addition for trash laden areas..................MO

I have a 12x10 SEF and its great for grass in the UK anyway more depth but no good in high mineralised soils On my ancient sites I tend to use the standard coil. Today at 99 sens 44 disc 2+ the ground I was on has loads of small iron if I use my usual 20 disc the chatter is hard to put up with. Then only down side of such a high disc is that very small Roman copper coins will be missed.
This site was Medieval and later site top find today a large Medieval pot leg about 14th Century A.D. Strange I NEVER find any of the pot they come from. Wonder why.I did also find an 18th century Lead Token plus two copper coins one 18th century farthing the other a Victoria penny.

partial quote from MONTE.....I've used many of the Detech coils, to include a few SEF's. They work, but they are heavy, especially with a great-feeling T2. I haven't found a combination that surpasses the T2 w/stock 11" BiAxial DD coil. It's virtually "the perfect" match.

Well said and excellent info with anyone who has a T2...

The Two finds that I mentioned on my last post. I do find that the SEF 12x10 it is comfortable to use. very effective on " clean " soils.

99 sens and 44 disc...blimey!

When l had my trusty T2 my settings were almost always sens 70 disc 5 tones +2 for Roman sites, trashy sites l would leave disc at 5, never more than 5, and could drop sens as low as 7 or 8 and still pull Roman coins, including tiny minims, at decent depth.

Don`t be afraid of using low sens, the T2 still has respectable depth on the lowest of settings and will winkle out small silver etc in trashy areas, the tone is so clear l never used to dig any rubbish at all, any 2-way signal l dug, l never used the numbers.

All metal is best for pasture, we`ve hammered an old Roman villa site that`s been pasture for donkeys years with every machine going for years, it got to the stage where it was a waste of time, finding nothing every trip...until l got my T2, in all metal l found 7 Roman coins and various bits in 2.5 hours, my mate with his XP GMP with 11" coil fitted found nothing.

As to the S.E.F coil on the T2, a waste of time for me.l tried one out on a medieval site and never found a thing for over an hour, switched back to the stock coil and bang, almost immediately started finding again. However, l found out later there was a batch of faulty S.E.F coils being sold by Joan Allens, maybe mine was one of those lol..

It went a.s.a.p....the S.E.F coils work better on some makes than others, but as someone stated, the stock coil is unbeatable if used correctly for the right conditions. If you try and get too much sens it has a negative effect, its trying to sort too many signals out under the coil in one go and even though the recovery speed is superb, it can only sort so many things at once.

Keep sens low and give the coil a chance to pick out the good bits.l`ve had Celtic silver units on a sens setting of just 8, depth is not always the key to finding the goodies.

Interesting I will try your settings on the trashy site of yesterday. I usually use 70 15/20 2+ I have found some great things with that see http://www.tekneticst2.com/ my posts on there under finds. When you say all metal do you mean sounds 1 ?

hi Youngted,

no, l mean all metal mode, you have discrim settings on the right and all metal left on the VDU?

l sold my T2 a few months ago when the price shot up, bought for

and I doubt you will find a coil to out do the stock Bi-Axial...The S.E.F. will out do it in coverage but seriously doubt it will be any deeper measurably.and I don't believe the target response will be as tight using the S.E.F.

Can't fix what ain't broke:wiggle:

Just my take

Keith

Thanks for the my usual is 70/80 sens 20 disc sounds 2+ I will try your settings see my fids on http://www.tekneticst2.com/finds.htm I sign myself as Brian on there.
