Set out to do my good deed before Winter

Hi All. Well got a call Sunday from a lady said she need some help. She lost here wedding rings she has had for 35 years. They are Platinum and she lost them in her picnic area next to their house . Fairly large area. Well I started out in the place where she thinks was the area she lost it, and hunted for 2hr today and only covered about a 1/3 the total area. I selected my MXT with DX-1 and the 5.3 coil set gain at 8 and dic at 2.5 in Relic mode and dug every high tone. We didn't find it but got $2 buc's in clad and about 16 toasted 1cent slugs and a ton of junk. I gave her the coins. she had to go run errands and I told her to give me a call when she was ready to search again. I did have a little trouble with the dx-1 pinpointing. Guess I just need to get used to it. I been using my Pistol probe until now but I plan to take it next time. Any one got any other suggestions? I dug every thing high tone, there is a load of iron, foil and screw caps, beer caps and tabs. I would really like to find these for her, she is a very nice lady.
Thanks for looking and HH

It may hit in the pull tab foil area.
Never had such a ring but suspect ( lead,gold zinc ) VDI's
Larry and Nancy may have a better idea.
Monte may also fill you in.

Make sure you ask when she lost the rings. I had a guy ask me if I could find his ring and after about three hours of digging everything in the lawn he chose to tell me that he had hauled in 2 feet of soil after he lost the ring. If it was lost within the last few months I would think that it would be close to the top of the soil so, u might try turning the sensitivity down & only dig the loud strong signals.

Platinum will run in the low VDI's. Even possibly a VDI of 1. Discrimination should be at 1 1/2 - 2. Ask when she lost them. That is a key factor. If they're recently lost, get a bigger coil on and listen for a strong signal. With the bigger coil, you will be able to cover more ground in less time. Make sure you overlap your swings. If I think of anything else, I'll let you know. Good luck and HH, Nancy

Thanks all for the great info. They were lost 4th of July this year. They been looking for them all summer, a freind saw me out hunting one day and asked for my Phone number. They have not added any soil so we should be looking for a surface target or just below ground. It is used by family that she said would have given it to her so hopefully the rings didn't walk off so they should be there some where. Thanks Nancy I'll drop the disc down to 1 1/2. LOL I for got she told me she used to throw 30 pennies out for the kids to find in the summer to get them out of the house I bet that place is loaded with zinc. The house is only 24 years old so no old stuff to be found. It was ranch land before that.

Another thing to keep in mind is since it will be a surface target, you can lower the sensitivity to reject just about everything except surface targets. You could also mentally reject anything above 25 VDI unless the rings were very large. Like Nancy said your largest coil will save a lot of time searching. Good luck.

I have a ladies platium ring. Ran it under the MXT this morning and the VDI was 18....don't know if that helps or not!

Hey thanks Cricket, I set the disc for VDI-10 up and Sen @ 6, have dug every thing. We have not found it yet the ground number is -95 which I don't understand why. I kind of figured that it would show around VDI +20.
