Shield Nickel

Went out to a school house site in Stark County Illinois from 1850 to 1890, currently a corn field. Spent six hours to find this 1868 shield nickel, in my last 5 minutes hunting. First one ever dug. I was digging a lot of beer tabs and almost walked on , glad I didn't.

Wow! that came out great for a nickel that old! I haven't found any old nickels yet metal detecting, Only one I've ever found is an 1883 V nickel (with cents) that I found in our chicken pen, on top of the ground, when I was a kid some 100 years ago. LOL. I still have it, but its so crusty you have to study it with a magnifying glass to make out the date. Congrats!
