Shooting Fish in a Barrell..first hunt inTTF with my hot Irish E-Trac!

I've fought with myself for the longest time with Explorers and E-Tracs versus my well-tuned and hot CZ-70's and 3 D's...finally the light has gone on... I acquired two Irish machines-an SE Pro and an E-Trac...both are hot stable machines, I swear the E-trac is close to one E-Trac I had and sold that would give a signal on a penny at 19 inches at 30 sens...anyway, yesterday on Thanksgiving morn I went to an 1850's house site that has a business in it and has probably been excavated around quite a bit...most recently in the back for a new septic system(I found some clay pipe and old glass there right after on top of the ground) The dirt is very soft and sandy which is not good when looking for old coins and relics. I hunted there once a month or so ago with a super Explorer II I had and found quite a few old wheats and no silver....this time I used an open screen in TTF with 1-1 to 1-30 rejected at the top and that's all-no problems with falsing in the iron, heavy in spots, nice tone and ID on good targets, even between the iron, managed a 34 and 35 wheats along with this crushed sterling silver size 10 thimble(hey it's silver)...I have some way better sites on tap soon with better soil stability. I used the SEF 6 x 8 coil in auto(usually 19) in the exact same spot I hunted with the EX II, sure nothing great but it can make an iron laden site more fun and productive...the signals are distinct kinda like a CZ or an X-terra 50 for that matter versus the kinda smeared signal you get with Explorers if you know what I mean, I almost felt like I was using a concentric coil...just my two cents :D

Very interesting Chris!---I remember that super hot Etrac you were telling me about back then.-----Glad you have "seen the light"! ;)----Are you SURE you are going to be able to stay from the CZ's though? :heh:-------Del

I'm here to stay...BTW, Minelab customer service out of Las Vegas is super amazing and fantastic...I needed a few things and they were right on top of it and went above and beyond what I ever expected! The items arrived just a few days later...HH

Nice finds Chris, Glad to see you on this side of the fence  always enjoyed your wit on the explorer forum with a little time and experience under your belt i feel you soon will be a E-TRAC Guru. Welcome aboard.

I dunno--check with dealers, I guess.--To see if they still have one on their shelf.----Question is, why do you want to get ahold of one that's made in Ireland???---I've had them that was both made in Ireland and made in Malaysia and there isn't a nickels worth of difference--they're the same machine & both EXCELLENT detectors.----We got three right now that was made (assembled) in Malaysia and they are "killer" Etracs.-----I'm not trying to put words in Chris's mouth but I think what he was referring to in a hot machine is the exceptional detector that you (on occasion) come across in any brand AND production run.---------Del

Well how can I get a hold of one that was made in Ireland??

frankly, I didn't want to start a "great E-trac hunt" kinda like for the 1021 and earlier 1121 CZ-3D's, I'm sure most of the Malaysian made E-tracs are super...I did find a few duds, really less than ideal Irish E-Tracs for that matter...most do not run or cannot run at 30 manual sens. anyway...I went out for a couple of hours today too at several sites...I'll be posting my Canadian large cent "spill" a little later :)

this is great to hear,as always heard they had some issues before, and am hoping they
got their s**t together!.to charge top dollar for a product, and get "crap" for service is
a "deal breaker" in this economy!..just sayin'

(h.h.!)

Call me a skeptic but what is the test that tells which Etrac is a hot one? I'm an electronics guy by trade and I'm sure there is some diff between units but enough to make much of a diff I have a very hard time believing that. I think usage tech skill and a lot of times just good luck of putting your coil over targets has a lot more to do with overall finds.

Agreed I also work with electronics and was wondering the same thing. All components are the same

Are they??? Well thats just it. When a batch of certain components runs out you open and use a new batch. Well one quality may be better than others. That is what I know of production. You buy batches by the best price, that is what I know as being a buyer and seller.

I see what your saying I suppose its possible I dont think I got a hot model:rofl:

I have used and tested numerous, probably 30 plus each, Fisher CZ-70 Pros and CZ-3D's over the years, many new in the box, including consecutive serial number machines since they first came out...I was shocked how some were real duds, whereas others were amazing in performance testing with the same settings, digital with the CZ-70's and analog with the CZ-3D's...furthermore, some of the machine frankly did not false in iron whereas some were terrible in it.

Now with E-Tracs...I have had probably 6 since they came out, all made in Ireland, the first would airtesting a penny around 12.5 inches using the stock Pro coil at 30 sensitivity with all other settings the same, the 2nd around 14.5, the third was around 19, another was about 16, then another around 14.5, the current one I have is close to 19, I know it's crazy but I have reported this "anomaly" before...I am not an electronics expert but I would think all should be pretty close in performance...I think it's due to coil manufacture variations and just the individual components themselves; I really think for the cost, machines should be "certified" by the manufacturer the perform to a certain rather impressive level.

I would add that when running in semi-auto especially, achievable detection depth is significantly affected so some machines will go deeper than others with the same coil type and settings than others if it happens to be a "hotter"...just my observations and that's all; not trying to create a debate-I would suggest using Terry's TTF settings and checking what your machine can do with a copper US penny 1982 and older just to see

This really pertains to all detectors frankly, I've observed it in X-terras and others too...JMHO...take from it what you want; just reporting something interesting, no point in punching a guy in the mouth for it and says he's FOS...certainly could keep it to myself but I thought it might be helpful to try to maximize individual machine performance especially in the field...yes, the operator, good hunting grounds and technique are still the biggest factor for success ;)
