Short hunts last Wed. and Thurs. only go me a few Keepers.

I got out Wednesday and Thursday after work for a short time and only got a few finds. I wanted to see if I could get anything from the Old Racetrack in my town, which is now a Golf Course. I have pulled a lot of Old Coins in past years but they are getting tougher to find due to fill being added last year and possibly other dirt work done in the past I don't know about. The Track is still visible on 3 sides of it and I know there has to be some Super Deep Coins out of the reach for the Explorer but I still get the urge to try and get lucky. Even though I didn't find a vast amount of finds during these 2 outings, I still like going back to the place because in the back of my mind I still say "could this be the day I get lucky and start hitting them one after another?". It's a huge area to cover so there still has to be somewhere that yields a few Oldies for me to retrieve. There was once a Brick School House on one side of the Golf Course and there was also a Play Day held every year where lots of people came to have fun. There were also 2 Ball Diamonds that I have heard about so this was a very active site at one point in time. I just wish that it was still all original but I am sure there has been lots of dirt work done in the past burying lots of Old Coins so Deep that it will take one heck of a machine to find them. But maybe someday that machine will be on the market and I can start making them finds that I know have to be out there. Anyways, let's get to it.

Dale and I hunted together on Wednesday after I got off of work since he wanted to try and get some Barber but that didn't happen for him. All he got were 2 Silver Roosevelt's which is better than Crusty Wheaties. 1 of the Rosie's was down a full 10" Deep, so there is definitely some dirt work done in certain areas. As for my finds, they were pretty meager but I am happy that I did find a few more from the Old Horse track to add to the collection. They consisted of only 6 Coins but it's 6 Coins I will proudly post and proudly take anytime. I found 1 Barber Dime and it is dated 1897-s. This was about 6" Deep and I had Dale go over the Target and he knew right away that it was Silver and most likely Barber. I dug it and told him that it was a Barber Dime and what the date was and he wanted to know what kind of shape it was in. I couldn't tell him then but when I dropped off my gear at home, I rinsed it and found it to be a worn Barber and then showed it to him on the way out to Rick's that night. It is a better Date and I knew that when I found it since I got one last year in higher grade and it books for $120. This one is more like G-4 and worth $18 but I am happy to add it to the collection. I also found 1 Indian Head that was next to a Pine Tree that was removed. It was about 6" Deep and it is dated 1903. I also got 4 Wheaties and they are dated 1911,1921-s,1929-d, and 1953-d.

As for Dale's finds on Wednesday, he was only able to recover 2 Silver Roosevelt Dimes but Silver's Silver and it's better than a Crusty Wheatie. That does it for this short post. I hope you all are getting out and making some nice finds while the weather is nice. It won't be too long and most of us will be in a Deep Freeze. Good Luck and HH to you all and thanks to you all that view my posts.[attachment 109587 DirtyCoins.jpg][attachment 109591 CleanedCoins.jpg]

is always nice to add to the collection...especially the better dates. As for the injun....those are a blast to find. I am getting to the point that I like finding them just as much as silver...seriously. Good luck on your upcoming hunts. I don't know about you buddy...but I'll hunt until I start to need a chisel to pry into the frozen ground. When that starts...I'm done for the year:detecting:

I made a pass though it back then and just got trash, cant beleive I missed the coins the first time I was there, but just made one pass though it and just got trash untill later on.. In 1977( were you even around then James as I am not sure of your age) I got 2 silver dollars in one week out of this old race track plus many many coins that year and so did my wife. I detected it every free time I had and there were no golfers playing golf and even did sometimes when they were and stayed out of their way. My wife got one of the most interesting finds and that was a old coin purse that the leather was rotted, but it had a seated dime, 2 IH and a 2 cent piece.
I used to have the list I got there that year, but wore it out caring in my wallet. I know I had the 2 silver dollars and 12 barber halves and 3 or 4 walker halves and if i remember right was 12 barber quarters and over 20 barber dimes plus many V nickles and buffalo's and 51 IH. One night my wife and me hit it for 2 hours and got over 60 coins before dark with nothing newer than 1940. This place was awesome and I let my friend a dealer know about it and he brought over 15 people out there one day even thought I told him to keep it a secret. This is one place that i will never forget as it was only 5 blocks from my house.
It did die quickly as in a couple of years it was hard to find anything there, but now with the Sovereign, the Explorers and the E Trac I use we are seeing a few coins coming out, but it is tough. I was there one day a week ago with James and I used the X-8 on the E-Trac while he had the Pro coil on his XS and let me hear a few targets he was getting, but I just couldn't swing my coil over a coin until I was leaving and got a 1906 IH which I lost again before I got home. Went back again with the new 12X15 SEF (think that is what it is called)coil and got a new penny, but went back on Monday and got a dollar bill in the grass a MN Viking key and a 1906 IH and a 1884 IH so there is still coins out there, but tough to get.
I hope the weather holds up a little longer as I want to get a seated dime out there before you do James, but I know if there is one there you will get it as you have the 6th sense as to were the silver is as we see with your post.

Rick

One clarification on Rick's part though. He put down that his wife and him went out for 2 hours 1 night and got over 60 Coins, nothing newer than 1940, but in reality, it was nothing newer than 1920. He has told me this story a lot and it just needed to be brought up since there was and most likely still is real Old Coins still waiting to be found. If that Seated is out there in that Golf Course Rick, I'll try and let you get it since you haven't had a Seated in awhile, but you better hurry since Winter is coming fast. Thanks for the history Rick and Good Luck and HH to you on the time we got left.:detecting:

Indian Head Pennies also. If your not finding Silver, please let it be Indian Heads! I just love the look of them Old Pennies and it is always great when you find a few that are in great shape. I will keep hunting until the ground freezes up also and then I will also be done for the year....Unless of course I can get my hands on a Cordless Sawz-all. Thanks for the reply and Good Luck and HH to you.

The Depot Park in town has a lot of fill in it and it would take some scraping to get to the good stuff. I tried it before and I was digging Clad at 8" Deep, so I left. Besides, I just can't hunt out everything around me because if I did that, then there wouldn't be anywhere to go on a Friday Afternoon. I hope you guys are getting out before the Big Snowfall that I heard is heading your direction. Good Luck and HH Mike.

Trying to find a few things before the ground turns white and rock hard. Gotta get the snowblower fired up and ready and deer hunting is on the agenda for the weekend. Hope one of us gets out. HH James.....

As for me going out this weekend, it will depend on the weather. I also have taken next week off for vacation time and if it is nice enough out, I plan on detecting the entire time. I have often wondered what kind of results I would have if I have detected for an entire week straight and if the weather is good enough to go out and do some diggin', were going to find out. Hope you are able to get some last minute finds for the next meeting Mike and hope you fellas don't get as much snow as fore-casted. Good Luck and HH!

Great finds James. I always look forward to your post. I too often wonder what it would be like to be able to hunt for an entire week, just how many coins could I find.

Best of luck next week, hope the weather holds out for you!

I really want to give it a shot for a week once and see what happens. I just hope that the weather gets warmer during next week and the snow stays away. Thanks for the reply Jeff and Good Luck and HH to you.:detecting:
