An answer to your question WHY does a coin not ID as a coin when scanned by the edge instead the face of the coin. It's is very simple, all metal detectors are surface detection detectors. Metal Detectors are calibrated to ID a coin by it's surface area and metal content. If you scan a coin on it's edge with a metal detector that has a threshold you will get a double blip similar to what a nail will sound like.
