Sidewalk tear outs and nickels

Yesterday I was on one of my long roadtrips. I had some things to do way up north and when I got done with that I MDed my way home.

The first place I found was a block long sidewalk and street tear out. The street was dug down way too far to MD so I just hit the sidewalks and I found a real nice 1874 IH, a 46d Rosie and 2 wheat's.

Then I hit 2 different older schools and only found 2 wheat's at one of them. Both of those places were picked pretty clean.

The last place was another street tear out in the downtown area but they also had dug down too much for me to MD but there was a half block long area of sidewalk tore out in front of some houses. So I hit that and found a real nice 1944D war nickel in mint shape. It's the best war nickel I have ever found. I also found a 1911 V nickel, 2 Buff's, a 1919 , 1916s, a 1883 IH and 2 wheat's.

So I had a pretty good day when it comes to finding nickels

Nice finds Mark! Congrats! We dont see too many tear outs around my area! I sure would like to give it a shot tho!

Mark - you made some fantastic finds and saved them from being buried underneath new concrete! - Jim

Jack, when ever you can drive a round the old parts of towns. they will have to repair or replace the old sewer or water lines someday. Right now is the best time of the year for that, it's the dry time of the year.

Nice finds!!

The old 1800's house that we've been detecting at for the last few years was torn down this past week. I stopped and talked to the owner last night and found out that they also pulled up the sidewalks. There were about 40' of a sidewalk going from the garage to the house and we've had a couple of notable finds on either side of this area. If the rain holds out we are going to go there with the Digger coils and see if anything has been trapped under there all these years.

I hope you find something there but most sidewalks that go from the house to the garage and from the house out to the street were put in when the house was built so most times their is not going to be anything under them. the sidewalks that run along the street were put in long after the house was built and those are the ones that you will have your best luck at when they get tore out.

The good news is that these sidewalks were added well after the house was built. The original garage was not in the same spot as where the existing garage is now. Based on a 1930's picture the original path to the original garage was about 25' to one side of the walks that were just pulled out and the place were the walks were just removed is right though a common area of the yard where people would have walked. That's not to say that we will definitely find something there but the chances could be pretty good. We are hoping to go there tonight. I'll post if we find something.

Some really nice finds there. I would tear out my own sidewalks if I thought that kind of treasure was down there. :bouncy:
