Silver avoids me

Coinseeker 78

New member
I go hunting with my buddy Joe quite often. He always finds Wheaties at least and Silver quite often. He uses a Explorer II and I use a Explorer SE. My finds are almost entirely clad. I am searching for coins 6 inches or deeper. I went to a old school today that I have hunted many times and dug on 8 inch or better holes and ended up with 50 cents in clad. One hole was 10 inches deep and yielded a memorial penny. I got 1 quarter 2 dimes and five pennies. I dug only three pieces of junk that rang as coins. What do I have to do to appease the silver Gods? I have found a gold plated buckle which I understand the explorers are not that great at finding. I have found only 2 pieces of silver in the 3 months I have owned the SE. My buddy has found at least 30 silver coins. The only difference in our searching is he covers a lot more area than I. Is he just cherry picking while I work the death out of an area searching among the clad and junk. Thanks for any reply.

I too thought the same thing.....all I did was get pennys...mostly memorials. I dont know if Im getting better at it or just in different places but in any case,, starting to recover silver...All good things come to those who wait. Good luck

need to hunt better sites to me Titan Man. Sounds like there is a lot of fill dirt or the soil has been turned over at some point which would be the reason for the Deep Clad and Junk. It's might be true that your hunting partner maybe getting more targets than you thus finding more Silver and Wheats which is the reason to cover as much ground as you can while hunting with a partner. The more targets you dig the more of a chance you have at finding that Silver you are after. Do you use a Probe for finding them Deeper Coins??? If not, that is one reason why you are not finding as many targets also. If you have a Probe, the targets are retrieved faster and you can move onto the next one quickly. I would hunt other sites that have less Deep Clad and that is Older to increase your chances of finding some good targets. The Silver is out there......you just have to find it. Hope this helps and Good Luck and HH to you.

I do have an in line X1 probe and use it when digging any plug. I think I will leave my detector in the car and ask him to let me follow him around to see what he is doing that makes the difference. I have used his settings on my detector but to no avail. I believe I know the sounds of coins and go by the sounds more than Digital or cursor indications on many occasions. Thanks for your reply.

Buddy...if you're hittin' a memorial at 10"....and you pass over a silver coin....your SE will light up like a Christmas tree:clapping:

Seriously...if you can hit a coin at 10"....when the coil passes over one that's silver....you'll dig it.

I was digging a five cent signal and dug up an ancient pull tab at about 5 inches. When I used my probe after digging the pull tab I got the penny signal. It ended up being a total of 10 inches deep but only 5 inches deep from the pin pointer.

You said you also dug some 8" holes...so I still think you just haven't passed over any silver yet.

If he is hunting the same sites as you are...and he is finding some silver...then you should soon.

Don't get discouraged...keep pluggin' along. Try some different sites...be aware of fill dirt....don't dig as many lower conductors...etc.

Sounds like your buddy just has more experience with his machine. It will come. One day it will all click, just get out there and get experience and time on your machine. He probably knows his machine well enough that he's not wasting time chasing iffy signals that he knows are bad and may even be passing up shallow clad and pennies (I would!). You get hung up on these signals so it takes you longer to cover ground. This will get better with experience. Sometimes hunting with someone puts more pressure on us to go faster or try harder and instead of making us better, we become less focused.

When I first got the Explorer, I used the learn feature and made a program for silver quarters only. I love silver quarters - they are my favorite coins to find. I found a lot of clad dimes and clad quarters, but also a few silver quarters running this way. As I got more experience and confidence, I added silver dimes to the program, and soon after opened up the coin program. You could also do the opposite and discriminate out all pennies, that way it is easier to focus on the high tones and learn them well.

I agree it is the sounds that make the difference. Hearing that high pitched silver sound is music to the ears. The meter can lie, but the sound is true.

Good idea to watch your buddy, or even better, follow him around and ask him to let you check his targets before he digs. I'm sure he can call out with good probability what the target will be before it's even dug. This way you can hear exactly the signals he is hearing and how they respond on your machine. You're lucky to be able to hunt with a friend who has the same machine, use it to your best advantage.

The same thing happened to me when I first bought the Safari. Tons of clad and not a single silver coin for about a month and a half or two of using this expensive machine. Then out of nowhere, I started nailing silver coin after silver coin, including a nice barber quarter and franklin half. Don't worry...like Bryce said, when you run over silver you'll know it! And then you'll be tuning your ears to that flutey sound.

I feel better today. It was not a great day but an acceptable one. My buddy got tired of speed hunting the same area as me so moved over to another area. I continued working the same area which was quite large. About a couple hours later Joe came back and was ready to go. He had found nothing and I had found 2 Wheaties. A 1944 and a 1949. I feel silver in my future now.

Will you let me know to appease the silver and gold demons? 99.9% of the time I get iron, steel and more iron!
