Still waiting on a Barber but I picked up my first seated tonight! An 1876 CC Seated Liberty dime. :D :D :D Anyone good at grading? Is this a VF-30 obverse and a F-12 reverse?

Went to the pounded park across from Fugio Field tonight. I'd decided I wanted a change and to see if I could find more in that field with what I've learned since I hit that park. (Found two Indians and a '20s Merc there (can't remember on wheats).) First time there with the Pro coil. Running at '32 sens. First found an '82 Indian Head in the hole around 5-6":

(Don't brass brush copper coins you might care about. :(

The signal had been bouncing all over the place but I thought I'd seen and heard a higher tone so I rechecked the hole with the X1. Couldn't get anything for sure in normal mode so went to VCO and it gave me a direction an inch or two off to the left. Removed some more dirt and got a nice singing tone with the probe. Since I was already looking at an Indian Head, I carefully removed some more dirt a few times and then saw silver at the bottom of the hole an inch or two further down. I'm thinking I finally have my Barber but it wasn't. I'm not arguing in the least! :bouncy:

Also picked up this IH (in peroxide now) on the way out. I think it's a '91. It was shallow (4"?) but still bouncing around and kind of iffy.

Thought after the fact that maybe I'd used your pun and, alas, I did. (And it's too late to change it.)

But in rereading your post, I see that I got the next two years from your dig! '75/'76 Seated and '81/'82 Indian.

Who's up next? You need to get the '77 Seated and '83 Indian. :)

I spent some time googling after I posted that trying to find images of graded ones. While Heritage (with their nice pictures) didn't have any graded that low that I found (at least that year), Alaska Coin Exchange had a bunch up. Not the best pictures, and probably their own grading, but it looks like the reverses of seated dimes seem to be a lower grade than the ANA grading book shows. I need to find a good online grading site.
 
Pretty cool, GR! What kind of site did you find that at? Remember how deep it was?

This park has never had buildings that I've been able to tell by old maps or iron patches but the location shows up on 1700s maps right at the end of where fancy houses were (and are). Now it's mainly a doggy toilet.

Oh, that last Indian was so shallow and it was bouncing around like a zinc does, that I'd actually skipped it earlier on. Glad I decided to dig it. From now on, I'll probably dig all zinc signals there. (There's not much modern clad, so that's easy.)
 
This seated was the second coin I found when I got back into MDing. I stopped beside the road by an old fence and no more than 2" down was the lady. I had a Garret GTI 450. Just before that I found a copper that was well worn but looks to be a conn.copper. Things have gotten harder since.GR
 
Too bad about the Indian Head. You should never Brass Brush something of Value and also, any Coin in great shape that has any kind of Build-Up on it's surface. If you Brass Brush the item, then you get what happened to your Indian Head. I would take a Magnifying Glass or Jeweler's Loop and look at the Coin before you attempt this again on any Coins you like. If there is an kind of Green Build-Up or any Thick Spots, then most likely there will be pitting just under it thus not using the Brush. I then would try either a Toothbrush with some Dawn Dishsoap or possibly a Plastic Bristled Brush with Soap and Water. Just depends on the Condition of the Coin. Soaking the Coin in Olive Oil for a few days may also loosen up the Crud making it easier to remove if neccessary. Also, if you see any Redness like you did before cleaning of a Copper/Bronze Coin, that will be a dead give-away on what the results will be if you Brass Brush the item. Congrats on the Seated Dime and hope this helps in not making anymore mistakes in cleaning favored Coins. Good Luck and HH.
