Hi everyone,
Things have been pretty slow going in the way of finds this month. I've been out quite a few times, but just haven't been in the right place I guess. Along with the usual clad, I have found a few older coins (10 Wheats, 1 Indian, and 2 Buffs) but just no luck with any silver.
Today, I finally scored another Merc at a local park. I was about two minutes into the hunt and maybe 15 feet from my truck, in an area of grass growing through crushed 3/4- gravel, when I got a raspy "penny" sound bouncing in the 12-41/42 range from one direction. I worked at trying to get a better angle on the target to see if I could get a cleaner ID, but all I was hearing and seeing was iron trash in the immediate vicinity. I did find a very small window (just enough for a micro-wiggle) that produced a clean 12-45 indicating about 4 inches deep. I made a "best guess" on pinpointing due to all the other trash in the area and was able to get about a two inch plug of grass and gravel. Checking the hole with the X-1 told me I was in the right area, so I started chipping away at the gravel with my screwdriver/probe to get to the target. I loosened up another 2-3 inches of gravel, scooped it out with my hand, and placed it on the towel. Rechecking with the X-1 revealed, to my surprise, a silver dime amongst the gravel on the towel. I thought "sweet... this is the way I like starting a hunt".
Well . . . as you can see below, the next three hours didn't amount to much. One thing that is unusual is I have found a watch or watch parts on each of the last three hunts. I guess that's why I like this hobby so much--you just never know what or when something interesting will turn up next.
Thanks for looking and good luck on your next hunt!
