Snow forecast for Illinois.....so I grabbed the SE

Larry (IL)

Well-known member
for maybe the last hunt of the year. I have been ignoring the small coil all summer so I put the 8" ML on and hit the trash and had a great hunt. What a difference a small coil makes. I went over the same spot today that I hunted yesterday with the Pro coil. I found the 1920-D yesterday and thought there would be some more, but I didn't expect four more silvers that I walked over. I found a couple more interesting things, six wheat's and a one piece button. The compact was pretty high class back in it's day. It is a Norida, Pat. Aug. 5, 1924. The screen rotates and sifts the powder before use. Good used ones sell for upward of $55 on the Internet. I haven't checked the advertising token out yet, but quite unique. C. Vanderboom, "It will pay you to see him before you buy a farm" On the back is says Good for Refund of your R.R. Fare if you buy 60 acres or more, Platte, S.D. Some of the words are mutilated and can't read the whole thing.

Very nice day Larry. Pretty nice of that guy to refund someones Railroad fare if they buy sixty acres of land from him, dont ya think? lol Happy you did well before the snow comes. Been raining here, I try to get out in between the breaks, almost burried my 4X4 pickup late yesterday coming out of an old plantation site, ground is saturated. Maybe you could wrap that compact up and give it to Nancy for Christmas. JK.
Stay warm,
John

I never saw the need to get a small coil until I was out today. I wandered into an iron minefield. I think a good 6" or a 4x7 would've helped greatly. I bet there are a ton of coins in that area as I was in today as it looked pretty old.

Nice finds Larry.
That advertising token is cool...as is the compact. I know the snow's comin'...but I hope it won't last long. Glad you got some good huntin' in.

There were two C. Vanderboom's in Platte, SD. Father and Son. Cornelius, the father, was at one time a 'glass-plate' photographer who I credit with all the good old family photos we have. He later went into business in Platte, and I believe he sold insurance. He passed away of a heart attack in the early 30's. This was the era when the farmers shipped their livestock to market via the Railroad so am thinking there is a connection there. Cornelius, the son, had an insurance business in Platte for many years and the Railroad was still running during his early years in business. My mother is 98 and you have provided me with new questions to ask her.

Thanks John, I would gladly trade you for the rain, they are saying up to 7 inches of snow by morning now., I would have gotten off easy if Nancy used face powder, but she never has. I'll have to go back to the old standbys, Gold and Diamonds.

Thanks Ellis, I like looking at others finds too.

Thanks Lonnie.

I have always know the need for smaller coils, I've been hunting for almost 25 years. My problem is getting myself to hunt that slow, that's just not me.

Thanks Bryce, I enjoy some of the odd ball finds as much as the silver.

Thanks for doing the legwork for me. Insurance and Real estate to this day seem to go hand in hand. I bet Estate is one of the words that I couldn't read, the work REAL stands out though. Thanks again.

An 88 V. Sweet! I can't wait to find a coin that old. It was hailing a little bit this morning in Providence,RI but tomorrow is supposed to be 56

The compact is a very cool find. I wish I could have joined in on the fun of hunting. I hate colds. Guess I'll have to wait till next year to get out. We've got about 6" of snow on the ground now and looks like we'll be getting more before the day is over. Hey, one good thing.........NO SCHOOL!!!! Good hunting Larry! :cheekkiss: HH to all, Nancy

It's a sad time of year when the season closes on detecting here in the Midwest. Glad you were able to have some luck. The compact is a great keeper and silver is always a welcome sight. Too bad the token is so hammered but it's still a fun find. Nice finds Larry.

Yea, it sounds like we will have a lot of time for research. You found a couple of nice finds yourself.
