Soccer Field: .. A rare time for me to use a larger-size search coil

Monte

Well-known member
This great weather we are having here in NW Oregon generated a lot of activity at a couple of soccer fields over the last week, especially the weekend. It's been several years since I concentrated on all the sports fields in this general area and I was hoping for some gold jewelry to come my way. I can't get around as well as I used to, but I started out in the cool of he morning an grabbed the T2. I know what it can do an hoped the 11+" DD coil would help cover the ground before it got too warm and before I wore out. The latter usually beats the heat.

One soccer field sounds as if they built over an old demolition derby site that abounds in junk, especially iron. The other, which has produced in the past, from time-to-time, is nice and quiet. Running the T2 with 2+ Tone ID, a Disc. setting of '10', and a Disc. Sensitivity of '84', I was almost hoping to encounter iron just to hear the low-tone grunty audio, but it was just a quiet areas. No iron, no EMI, and, sadly, no gold jewelry.

Ten or fifteen years ago I know players used to wear a lot of gold jewelry, especially Hispanics, and while we have an abundance of them kicking a ball around here, I think they are leaving the shiny stuff in their car or at home. Even the coin-count pales to what used to be lost, but at least I hobbled away with something to show for my efforts. I've been using my Omega w/8", G2 w/5" and MXT Pro w/6

Some have used the T2 and Omega or other detector model and commented about EMI issues. I know I try to run my Omega at a Sensitivity level of '99,' and usually can, but I will admit the Omega has been/is the noisier model in my detector battery. Some places it is just frustrating, but that's just how it is. I still enjoy my Omega and the performance I get out of it.

The T2, for me, hasn't been as noisy as I seem to read in some posts. I don't max the Sensitivity out in the Disc. mode but I do usually run it up in the'80's which, for the T2, is pretty warm, yet it hasn't had EMI issues. For those who do experience EMI with the T2, is it usually with the 11" and not the5" coil? Is it only when too closer to a power substation or transformer or other major source of concern? How high is your Sensitivity set, and how low is the Discrimination level that you usually use?

Hi Monte, Today i ran the 5' coil on the T2se with sens. at 99 and didn,t have any EMI till i set it down. AS long as i had it to the ground it did fine, and i was hunting next to a big hospital. I don,t have many places to hunt that the trash don,t drive me nuts. I can put the 5.3 coil on my MXT and do better than with the T2se. I might just sell my T2 and go back to my MXT full time, it is hard to beat. I also have a Eagle 11 sl, that i love just to heavy. Do you think the MXT dose just as good as the T2? Now that you have went over the sports field with the T2, go over it with the MXT and 9.5" coil and see if you do better. Good luck Flintstone

Monte, I have been bugging Dave J. for a while now about producing a 4" concentric coil for the Teknetics line. Don't know why they can't, since they can make them work for a few of the Lower Fisher units. A Delta with the 4" coil would be an asset.

Monte,

Im happy to hear you made it home safe, sorry I missed you while you was in Utah maybe next time we can do some hunting, I, going strong with my Omega and really starting to learn how it works.

Monte,
I've started (for the sake of my ears, brain and sanity) to lower the sensitivity on my Omega to about 75-80 for some areas. I find that if I slow down (right down) then I still get good sensitivity and enough depth to get our old (Australian) silver, ie. 3d, 6d, 1/- and 2/-. The 3d (threepence) is a tiny coin, but I have found many of them o ver the last few months by lowering the sensitivity and getting between the trash, including lots of rusty bottle caps, using the 10" concentric coil.

First, I error on occasion and catch myself, but can't let this opportunity slip by. I'd set that T2 down often as well, and it might have been good to be by the hospital in case you needed help with an aching back. I'm sure that T2 with a 5 foot coil would get fatiguing and pick up all sorts of EMI, if it was angled in the air. :stars:

Seriously, I really enjoy the sub-5" DD on my Omega and G2, but haven't worked with the T2 & 5" coil all that much, only borrowed T2 Camo with the 5"several year ago.

That's what I am usually up against, unless I pick on a wide-open sports field or go out in the middle of an older and well-hunted park. I keep the11" DD on the T2, but I really seldom put it to work. I keep then 950 on my VX3 as that's what I usually grab for 'cruising' those big, open area sites. I do use the 8" Concentric on my Omega as a quick-grab unit to hit the very productive wood-chip and sand-filled playgrounds and a few other places, but most often I am hard at work with smaller-than-stock coils.

My MXT Pro keeps the 5.3 Eclipse mounted full-time (a 6

I just prefer a round shape with a Concentric designed filling. The Teknetics 5" DD coil works fine for me on the Omega and G2 and Delta. I plan to work it on the Euro-Tek in the trashy ghost towns this summer as well. It really isn't a 5" coil, but measures about 45/8" diameter, and that's small enough for me. I don't need smaller. I hunt trashier sites most of the time and like to use a coil from about 6" to 7", give-or-take a little. That's why I like the 6

Yes, I made it back just fine, but I am still going to plan another trip back there and do a full-day seminar. The T2 is okay but I just haven't used this one (my 3rd) all that often as I usually prefer to grab one of my main-use models that are always with me. I still use my Omega the most out of all the Teknetics line, and might even set the G2 aside and put a Euro-Tek Pro in it's place on the Tahoe's back seat this summer. Too many older sites with a lot of iron trash (mainly nails) to have to deal with.

I liked simple, and I like performance, and I usually hunt iron infested sites. The models I usually keep on board in my travels are all simple, but provide ample performance for the tasks at hand. I might work the Euro-Tek Pro with the 8" and 5" DD coils and then decide which coil to keep mounted on the Omega and Euro-Tek to tackle most site challenges I encounter.

PS: Time was short and I didn't get a chance to hit those two sites in you referred m to. I hope you have and that they were productive. I actually didn't get any time to hunt older sites in Utah, not even my all-time favorite ghost town, and that's rare that I didn't side-jog to get out there. My Omega did round me up some artifacts and three trade tokens from an Oregon ghost town on the way there, however.

I'll be opening a shop and moving to a bigger location this month and be tied up for a while, but I'll let you know when I plan my next trip back there.

My Omega is the noisiest detector I own. It is also the most used in urban locations, and I can still usually operate at '99' Sensitivity, but there are times when it is so bad I have to drop it to the 45-55 range.

Due to the digital influence we have to work with in many modern detectors, some need to be worked a bit slower to get more out of them, especially in some bad-ground environments. I have switched from the stock elliptical 5

Good Luck Monte, let me know when you will be back, I found a real good spot we need to check out, one of the best so far and the way you like ghost towns I no this place will be great
