some winter finds and Minelab questions

Got out some to the old city park and found this stuff at the bottom of the sledding hill. Nothing old. Ground is still frozen. Hard to get digger down more than an inch but it sure was fun. Boy am I sore!!!!

Still waiting to get my new detector. Taxes ate up almost half my bonus. Will have to downgrade my previous choices to something a big cheaper if I want to get something sooner than later. Looking at the X Terra 70 now. A bit easier to learn than the explorer from the looks of things - but have to change the head for each of the three available operating frequencies. Looks like I would have to search each area three times (once for each head thats attached) in order to take full advantage of the multi frequency technology.

Does the explorer SE require changing the head every time I want to search in a different frequency range or will one head transmit all frequencies at once? Maybe the Quatro would be the best next choice - but I don't see anything for either the SE or Quatro that says it can be used as a dual purpose machine (coin shooting and prospecting). I know - no gold in Iowa - but someday I may move somewhere that has the stuff. I don't have the cash to buy both a coin/relic machine and a gold hunting machine.

Can a person that can't figure out how to make a digital camera focus properly hope to learn to use an Explorer SE?

(i was actually just trying to be funny on that last question)

Congrats on your finds and getting out detecting. Can't answer your questions about the X Terra 70 or the SE since I have never owned or used either (though the SE is much like the Exp II). SemperFi (Bill) has an SE I believe. Glad you were able to get out. I am still hoping I can before it re-freezes up here. Supposed to rain most of the day but have work at the church to do and grocery shopping so don't know if I will get out. I am glad others can and do when they can. Again congrats on the finds. (Don't those signals in the frozen ground drive ya knuts...knowing something good is probably there but you can't get to them?)

You may still be able to get a used detector and even get some accessories for the price of a new machine. Have you checked the Metal Detection Equipment for Sale forum here on Findmall and other places to see what is being sold and for how much. Just a thought.

As for the Explorer. Put a coil on and go diggin! I use my Explorer to relic hunt and coin hunt, and have even used it at the beach. No need to change machines. You know, you can get a like new slightly used Explorer II for a lot less money, than a new SE. There are even some lightly used SE's on the market so that you can take advantage of the Explorer's awesome abilities. You also have us at your disposal to help you learn it! :)

WTG with the finds! You earned them from all the hard frozen digging.

I used to have an X-Terra 70, Had all three coils, only the (M) and (H) coils were the DD 10.5" medium and the 6X9 DD elliptical (H) coil.

I feel the 6X9" (H) DD elliptical is the best coil for the X-70, The high kHz works well with gold prospecting and for relic detecting. Even for coin shooting, Allot of X-Terra 70 users are using this coil the most.

As far as the Explorer goes, One coil works on all Freq. The Explorer does an excellent job on both Coin and relic hunting and Beach detecting as well, Not good for prospecting though.

Stay away from the Quattro, It has a much too slow recovery speed. The machine should be recalled, I don't know how that one slipped through the cracks.

If money is limited, Get a used X-70 and if possible purchase the 6X9" DD (H) elliptical coil or a used Explorer II.

Good luck,
Paul (Ca)
