I've just recently started asking people to detect on their properties.Previously,I've stuck to mostly public lands, cellar holes on government lands, etc.
However,I find that total strangers are quick to grant permission and people who know me tend to say no.
I have a very good reputation in my area and people who know me,seem to like me. I have a spotless criminal record-I've never even had a traffic ticket.
But I've asked several locals over the past year if I could detect on their land and either been told no outright,or they beat around the bush long enough to where I got the hint the answer was no.
Just today I asked a stranger(the new owner) if I could hunt for a gold ring I lost in the back yard of a house I rented in back in the early 90's.He was more than happy to let me do it.Couldn't have cared less and even left while I was doing it.I didn't find it,but at least I got the chance to look for it.
On the way home,I saw one of the locals who lives on the same road as me.His parents' house has been vacant for over 10 years and is starting to fall down. This guy's father knew my father for years and they liked each other..This man also knows my father and they get along great. This man knows ME as I ride my bike past his house frequently and I stop and play with his dog-I even helped the dog get over his fear of strangers. This guy and I have chatted a lot and I've talked even more to his nice wife.No problems whatsoever.
I asked him today if I could hunt the lawn/former garden area in front of the parents' house and he wasted no time telling me no.He assured me there was nothing there to find. The house was built in 1850-I'm sure there is..
You'd think strangers would be the ones to say no,but that isn't what I experience.Very odd.
