Have the GT with standard 10 coil and Ron's meter.

I'm wondering if the SEF 10x 12 or the tornado 8 are worth the additional investment. I do like my AT Pro in trash sites with the 5 x 8 coil so I guess the Tornado 8 would be on a back burner, although they are getting harder to find.

So, for $180.00 will the 12 x 10 get much better readings and depth? I hunt both dry land and ocean.

I have been using the SEF 10X12 for a couple of years on the Sovereign GT. It appears to give me a little better depth and better target ID. Even as large as the coil is it separates targets very well. There are times that I know that there is a coin mixed in all the tones that the headphones are putting out and with a little work I can separate the coin out of the trash. It has been my coil of preference since I put it on my GT. I have the 5.5, 8, 10 and 13 inch coils also but the 10X12 has only been off the GT a few times in the past 2 plus years.

Unfortunately yesterday afternoon I kept having trouble with my GT screaming at me and then going dead. I finally discovered that I have an intermittent lack of contact in the coil wire where it goes into the coil

I am currently wondering what I should do as I do not know of anyone who repairs coils and must decide if I want to order one from Europe as none of the US Dealers will carry the coil due to the fact that the Sovereign is no manufactured.

The SEF 10X12 and the Tornado 10 inch coils are very close in performance.My suggestion if you purchase a SEF 10x12 sell the Tornado 10 inch.At this time I have the Tornado 10 inch and very happy with the performance.The SEF probably separates a little better and has excellent depth.If I only had the 10 inch Tornado instead of going with the SEF for another coil,I would get a Tornado 800 coil.Good Luck Ron
 
I agree with Ron on the 10 inch Tornado coil as it is one of the better coils out there. I have a 10X12 SEF coil and only used it one time myself and really didn't see anything to brag about, but my hunting is on land and maybe great in beach hunting. The coils I like for the bigger coils is the Sun Ray S-12 coil as it does well for me and for a smaller coil which a person should have also the Sun Ray S-8 was my favorite and never used the Tornado 8 inch and many do like this coil, so I would consider one of them also and not had to use anything smaller as the S-8 for me and I hear the 8 inch Tornado coil separates real good also.
I may try the 10X12 again to be sure and may just sell it too.

Im assuming you arent beach hunting. If you were you might rethink a small coil unless your beach is iron infested or just trashy. If its iron infested then id keep using the Pro whre i could for the recovery time, sensitivity to smaller gold, and the TID screen. Remember also unlike the SunRay.... the ML coil is only 7 1/4". Im not finding the smaller coil to be anymore sensitive to smaller gold and you loose a little depth and coverage. You can run higher sensitivity in most locations and because it is smaller it recovers faster.... thus separates in trash better. If you ever run that small ML coil on an Xcal in PP you notice you dont hear as much mineralizition noise so you tend to pick up small targets because of that. The 10 standard will perform as well as say a 13" near the water because of the reduced sensitivity you may have to run on the larger coil. BUT on open beach.... advantage goes to the large coil.
 
In Ontario Canada I have an older sovereign with a wot coil , control box on a belt. I have been using this for 10 years now and have never gone back to stock coil . Probably because of excellent results with quality and small objects . My last finds ,last time out 1803 U.S.cent ,2 colonial coppers and a 1774 2 real .----- mike
 
Okay, I just picked up a Coinsearch 8 on Ebay for $88.00 which looks in pretty good shape and based on my research here it seem to be a coil many like.

In my original post I did fail to mention that I do have the newer 15 WOT along with the 10" Tornado so the addition of the Coinsearch 8 should keep me happy for a while. Even though it is not waterproof I think the 15 and the 10 will keep me busy at the ocean.

Thanks for all your help here and throughout the form. I did like Rick(ND) comments in other threads about how it helps you learn the machine and I sure do need that.
 
If you haven't already, you may want to read my book on the Sovereign/Excalibur in the sticky at the top of this page. The Sovereign/Excalibur is hard to beat in the wet salt sand, and water. Hope you find it helpful...

I have the book in my iBooks library and find it very educational. I can't imagine the amount of work you guys did putting all that together. Thank you!
 
Going to buy a tornado 10 inch my stock 8 in BBS coil has a shorting / split wire 2 ft from coil .will this Tornado 10 in work on an older Sovereign XS ?? New to this forum & found a lot of great info from you guys..Thanks ..
 
With the Sovereign any of the coils made for the Sovereigns whether the oldest of them to the newest ones are all interchangeable, but only coils made for the Sovereigns as no other coil will work on the Sovereigns.

Yes this 8 inch coinsearch is one of the best coils made for the Sovereigns with the drawback they were not waterproof. To me they made the signals of a good target easiest to hear as it seem to have a longer tone to them for us to hear better.
I seen this coil on E-Bay and was going to bid on it myself for a extra if the price was reasonable to let other use if they had problems learning their Sovereigns, but forgot to keep tabs on it to see what it was selling for. It is good to see someone who needed it get it and hope it will help you a lot. I know some will not believe it but once you get to know your Sovereigns and go slow I have amaze some with this coil with depth of over 12 inches deep on actual targets of coins in the ground, not reburied or air test. At that depth some are just a slight change in threshold and when going super slow and will not read correctly on a 180 meter or tones may not be correct, but you can tell they are trying to reach the correct ones and repeatable when doing the Sovereign wiggle.
I was able to do this with my Sovereign XS2 and my XS back up I had at the time with the coinsearch coil, the Sun Ray DTI meter with the Sun Ray S-1 probe I was using as the probe was very important when finding them that deep and feel the Uni Probe built into the headphones would do as well as it will see deeper, but no disc with this probe.

Thanks rick ..do you have any experience w/ the Large WOT coil on the sovereign ? as far as separation , or is it useless in trashy areas ?
 
I tried a couple of the WOTs in some of the bigger area that were older and was hoping to find some deeper coins, but didn't happen for me. I let a couple others try them in some of the parks and ball fields and they too didn't like them for their hunting. Now some really like them and I am sure they seem to be very popular with the beach hunters so I am sure they do well in some cases, but for my park, ball Fields and some older yard it didn't impress me much at all. For me for a bigger coils the Sun Ray S12 did well for me, but like I say that was for me and my hunting.
