If you ditch the coil cover and use spray on bed liner the 15x12 is even lighter than the 10" Tornado I think from memory (check the coil weight thread in the coil sticky).
I too found that a lower sensitivity with it often gave better ID and tone at depth, much lower than max stable sensitivity. Only coil I've seen that with thus far, and I think it's due to it taking in too much ground matrix for it's size. Only way to tell is to find a fringe depth whisper at max stable sensitivity and then start lowering it at you sweep over the target. Often I found say while a 9PM sensitivity setting was stable, around 1 or 2 PM seemed to give me a much more easier/clean ID and tone at depth.
I should make a clarification- I said the 12x10 was deeper on both sand and soil for me than the 15x12 on coin/ring sized targets. Not sure if the 12x10 is any deeper in my sand, but for sure on land it was deeper on such targets than my 15x12. Both my soils and sands are mineralized, so the only thing I can guess is the types of minerals at my land sites was too much with the 15x12's size to for the Sovereign to deal with when ran as hot as possible. The official field report of these coils though does show the 12x10 is deeper on dime or at least sub-dime sized targets than the 15x12, while the 15x12 was deeper on say 50 cent sized targets or bigger, as one would expect with a larger coil.
The 15x12 is a great coil for sure, and for it's size is no slouch at left/right unmasking. I dug a barber dime in the midst of some heavy iron with it, along with a merc in the midst of some heavy tabs and foil, that were surrounding by all these things. If a target interests you, try wiggling the last 2 or 3" of the tip at it. Both SEFs get even more laser like in the DD line near the ends, although the center is even more scapel sharp like than any coil I ever used.
The 15x12, like the 12x10, are rock solid stable coils in both EMI and heavy iron. They seem to ride over such pot holes in the road without getting themselves bounced out of control. Faster "recovery" from such distractions is key to finding masked stuff. Both outstanding coils, and one day, even though I plan to pick up a 13" Ultimate as my big open area coil, I plan to pick up another 15x12 again for such areas, but 99% of the time the 12x10 is my go-to coil for land hunts.
If anybody is considering using the SEFs in the water, don't get one for that unless you can deal with a good bit more drag than the 10" Tornado. For that reason, I may pick up a S-12 just for my water rig, as it's round shape might not be any more drag than the Tornado for the most part.
