Spanish Silver Found In Ohio!!

OhioCoinHunter

New member
Today was a beautiful day for metal detecting here in Ohio. So I grabbed my E-trac tipped with the 10x12 SEF Butterfly coil and headed to a park to hunt a particular field. After a couple of hours I found a silver thimble and a couple of wheat cents. I got bored and decided to putter around to other areas of the park. Man, am I glad I decided to move on! I soon found my best find to date. I got a silver hit at about 5 inches deep. I dug down and found one of those smooth punch out disks from an electrical junction box (or so I thought). I've found them before. I rubbed the dirt off and took another look at it. I then noticed features that made me realize I had found a coin. I took out the small bottle of water I carry with me and very carefully washed the rest of the dirt off. I then discovered it was a 1788 silver coin! I couldn't believe my eyes. When I got home I looked at it again and noticed the name "Carolus III." I typed that into the Yahoo search engine box along with the words "silver" and "coin." I quickly learned I had found a very special coin - a 1788 Spanish Silver Reale! Spanish Silver, Baby!!!

When my wife came home from work, I showed her the coin. She looked at it and exclaimed, "1788!?" It's freaking amazing!

This coin is 222 years old and was minted when Ohio was wild frontier populated by settlers and Native Americans! Someone dropped it in the 1700's...and I found it today with my metal detector. :yo:

I'm still in a state of shock!
Dan

Bryce, you are the one who sold me on that coil. Your "no bull" field reviews are great. So, I also want to thank you. That coil netted me my best find to date. Freaking Awesome!!!

Mark, I'm hiding somewhere in Central Ohio around the Columbus area. A Spanish gold coin was found about two miles from where I found my silver. And a few others around here have found Spanish silver also. But I never thought I'd be so lucky to find one. The silver gods must have been smiling upon me! :please:

Thanks, Dan. I was using the stock coin discrimination pattern with silver dollars latched in.

Great find :beers:

Great find! It was also neat that you got it on tape. It is hard to believe that something this old came out of Ohio but you never know. Several years back, my friend found a Spanish 5 Real in NE Ohio. Just think of all the history your coin has seen. Thanks for sharing and happy hunting!

Congrats on a Very Nice find. I found a 1/2 reale in Missouri about 3 years ago, and still wonder about how it got where it was. I checked my World coin book for your coin, but it only covers the 1800s. However, here is a little info to help determine the denomiantion, just in case your not sure. If you weigh the coin, a 1/2 Reale initially weighed 1.69 grams, and a Reale weighed 3.3834 grams. the half is very thin as yours looks, but is about the diameter of a dime, where yours looks more "nickel" size. The mint mark and assayers intials were on the back, and looking at the coin, they are up the left side. The assayers intials on your coin look like I J, the mint mark would be between them and REX, but I can't make out the letters in that area. Congrats again and also very nice video....Good Luck
