Spectra V-3 vs. E-Trac head-to-head video

Take this with a grain of salt because they say nothing of their settings on either machine, but its still a video worth watching. You do get to see a little of the discriminition screen on the E-Trac.

As you said, what the settings were on each is missing and having used both detectors a good deal, that makes a big difference in performance - even more so on the V3 due to the additional adjustments that are possible.

Whenever I see the posts that compare one high end model to another I equate them to the age-old arguments of which pickup truck is better - Ford, Chevy or Dodge. As they say, Opinions . . . everyone has one.

I've known guys that use high end detectors such as the DFX, CZ, F-75, T-2 and 2500 and for those that have become one with their detector, they can hunt right along users of other high end detectors. Often I watch them and say I would never have dug a specific signal yet they say they can tell it was good and pull something of value from impressive depths or amongst trash. It might not work for me but it does for them so who is using the better or the right detector?

I guess I would say that whatever detector lets you make finds you are satisfied with for your style of hunting is the best detector.

Just one opinion . . . . as I said, we all have them

And no noise cancel with the Etrac when detecting the second target. Could have been a more accurate result.

Great post Andy.

I have both machines and I see similar performance with both with both having different but valuable strong suits.

I read too many posts/threads with people who just know their machine is superior. Maybe even more so on the ML forums. ;) (sorry guys).

I'm a member of a 4x4 club and theres a lot of brand biased bashing in that arena too. We've pretty pretty much elinimated it in our club and just have fun wheeling what you drive. Who cares what someone else drives or what detector they swing. Just get out and have fun!

Edited to add: I know the guy who made the video and the intent was not to try and show one or the other was superior. Both machines belong to him and he loves both.

It was pretty obvious he was not that familiar with the V3 yet, he used the Analyze mode like he was in search mode. You want to make a single pass in Analyze. Being both a Minelab and White's guy, I have to agree that brand is not that big of a deal, it has more to do with the type of hunting you do and whether you are having fun yet. I have to give the silver and copper edge to ML and the gold to White's.

That's the first time I've ever heard the V3 audio!!!

It sounds like a 1980's Pong game. I couldn't use that.

I'm sure there are plenty of Whites users (as well as those of other brands) that would say the same about the sounds that come from an Explorer or E-Trac. Those of us that have "become one" with our Minelab's can pick out the swet sound of silver from what others would say is simply a bunch of noise. Think back to when you started with you Minelab . . . . . was the response easily understandable? Looking at the myriad of posts from newbies commenting on the audio, I think not. But time in the field allowed us to learn what deep, good targets sounded like and it became second nature.

As Larry said in his post, the user in the video could have done things differently in terms of mode and audio. The adjustability of the V3 allows for extreme customization and I have a number of site-specific programs saved that were designed in the field checking what at first were marginal signals yet after playing with the Live Controls, became much clearer and distinct. I've been out with guys swinging Minelab's that could not hit targets I was and found that they had one or more settings goofed up . . . . a quick adjustment and a whole new detector appeared.

I do not think that any of the manufacturers build a bad high end machine. If you take the time (which many users do not do), listen to what the machine is telling you and understand what each adjustment does (which many users do not), then you can make great finds with any brand. It comes down to what detector you prefer for various reasons - weight, balance, response, audio sound . . . . even color or simply the brand . . . . . and then spending the time in the field actually using it to become proficient with it.

So when are you writing the V3 book? :detecting::clapping:

Need to spend some down time actually hunting for a while . . . . . . .

Books are getting delivered Friday which has been a project in the works for a while . . . . . appreciate the input many provided and hope it fills a niche that helps people find more regardless of the brand they are swinging.

Ah yes, the general metal detecting book you mentioned awhile back. I'm very much looking forward to reading that one.

It was like going from a single note wooden flute to a brass band. I agree that with any High End machine you will get good results, it mostly depends on operator and head space=knowledge and depends upon the application it is being used for. They are all good, it's just personal preference, don't knock it til you try it. If I could I would have the Top machine in all brands, its just not financially feasible. I still have the 2500 not a thing wrong with it, but it has its place.

When I drafted up the Explorer and E-Trac Handbook I had one hunter from the UK say that whenever he stepped up to a new detector, his finds went down initially as he leanred the machine . . . and once he got past the learning curve the increased and surpassed what he had been finding. Selling the detector before getting past that dip woudl ensure one would be soured on the detector and go back to what may have been a lesser albeit more familar detector.

Bill Paxton, a good friend of mine in LA, has always subscribed to the policy of not selling a detector until he had found enough to pay for it . . . . which forces him to spend the time to learn it and make an informed decision.

Good points to keep in mind . . . . . if you look at the various brand-specific forums there are great finds posted on all of them.

If you enjoy the time in the field, make finds that keep you energized and have good friends you can shre your experiences with . . . . . is the particular model or brand you swing really important?

Hey Neb, Thanks for making the video. It is a tough thing to do well and takes lots of practice. Keep em coming! We will critique as well as enjoy them. Just a hint, it is hard to see the screens so a quick verbal will save us dim eyed ones from trying to make it out.

Sorry I can't take credit for the video. I just found it on youtube.

How bogus...

The V3 ran out of batteries on the second target. Try doing the test with a fresh set of batteries for a fair comparison. I want to get to the bottom of this debate as much as any of us, but I want that 4 minutes of my life back. It was looking like Minelab was hands down victor...and then we learn the V3 is operating on low batteries...seriously?

What a colossal waste of time and bandwidth. No flaming intended...but really? Low batteries?...
