Spiderbite in the field??. Something bit me...

Here in the Pacific North West its the start of spider season. When hiking you start noticing webs & funnels much more this time of year. They are usefull preadators &m I leave 'em alone if I can.

I didn't feel a thing but directly upon coming home from a hunt yesterday I noticed a pain & tight skin on my left ankle. I saw the classic 2 fang mark & figured I had been bitten. It has been a while but these spiders-likely a "hobo" spider do have a nasty bite & it leads to minor necrosis in some cases. I'm doing the soap & water cleaning & application of hydrogen peroxide to clean the wound. They live in funnels in the ground & I likely disturbed him when digging.Crawled up my leg & pants brushed him & fangs deployed!. Funny how the bite is typically painless. Anyone else get bit detecting?. Just part of being outdoors IMHO...

PS...Scored a nice pre-fire Coinscanner pro 2 & it was doing very well after a bit of practice.One of those deals I couldn't pass up. I was testing it when I got bit.

Keep a close eye on the necrosis. If it gets worse....you know to go see a Doc.

Yeah, just part of being a human on this planet..full of bitey, stingy, itchy, scratchys out there...you got a good attitude about this which leads me to believe this is not for first run in with an arachnid.
I put clayfrom a spring on stuff like this, it dries at night and pulls the poison out of the wound. Humans are really fragile, its a wonder any of us live at all...

My son , a scout counselor this summer, had a so called bite looking just like that, it was misdiagnosed. Turns out he had a staff infection and was put on oral antibiotics Put an ink circle around the outer reaches of the redness, the circle should not be getting bigger and bigger day after day. A look by a Dr might be indicated if it doesnt improve shortly. CO

I got nailed today while looking for a lost ring. Wearing flip-flops, and i either stepped in stinging nettle grass, got nailed by a wasp, or something along those lines. My entire foot got stung, burned the entire side and top of my foot for about 2 hours. Still hurts 6 hours later, but not killing me.

My insurance sucks at best...But yes if it gets bad I'm going.


I doubt there is anything more than keeping it clean & dressed. I had a similar "bite" or whatever many years back & lost a small chunk of flesh but it healed fine.This is day 2 & yesterday was worse. So hopefully it's on the road to wellville.Hydrogen peroxide is a wonder cure all for me. I saw it in action years ago when a hiker got a bad infection. He probably should have been flown out but back then that was a huge hairy deal. He used a glass full & stuck his infected finger in it till the bubbles stopped. He hiked his way out with another group.

Not reccomended mind you but the stuff does a good job of cleaning out any dead tissue or germs in my experience.

My waaah is I wanted to do some river wading/detecting & no way in heck I'm doing that with this wound.

I got bite by a spider 20 years ago and the hole is still visible. Felt like a bee sting on my calf when I was wearing jeans. Spiders lay eggs when they bite and the wound will not heal for months, expect a lot of redness and swelling and do see a doctor.

That bit looks mean.
I've had similar bits two or three on a yearly basis.
Don't feel the bite but gets real ithcy a few days later
and swollen like this one.
I was told to use a Hydrocortisone cream and get instant
relief from the itching.
Also heals faster .
Not sure what bit me usually on the base of the feet or upper legs.
We sometimes are bitten by black flies and that oinment
also works great on the bites.
You can get that product over the counter at a dug store,the milder version.

Ok. This was used about 10 years ago and was very popular- I have used it before on a spider bite. The electronic zappers. I don't know the risks if one has heart problems, etc. and I'm not a doctor, so caution. The deal is to put the prongs on each side of the bite and zap yourself for 2 seconds about twice. I sat there for about 2 minutes before I had enough nerve to push the button. The voltage is supposed to break up the venom. Still have mine for this emergency (snake bites) Aparrently started in some place like Africa with the mamba snakebite (which no one survives). I think the story is the guy fell or touched some serious voltage after the bite and survived the bite and upon investigation it was found that the current broke up the venom. I wouldn't use the higher voltages ones, though.

Hi Darkflight, Be good to know what the prefered Med. treatment a Dr. would recomend, since you are in an area populated with so many spiders. I remember reading an article in either Sports Afield, of Field and Stream,probably 45 years ago of this guy that was into the deep bush and got bit by a big rattlesnake. Best I remember about the article was that he either packed the bite with snow, or kept soaking it in a cold mountain stream from the mountain he was on. 3 -4days time and he showed no sign of ilness and went on to finish his hunt. I haven't read up on the up to date (they do change sometimes) Med Procedures but do know that hot and cold packs are sometimes promoted for certain things.. The cold packs for snake bite, would also seem to apply to spider bites also.I usually tuck my pants cuff into my socks when going into the woods or brush,(even with my snake leggons on) more so for ticks than spiders, LOL, one hot day when walking the woods and wearing a V neck "T"shirt,I realized the V had scooped in a Huge long legged "Woods Spider" and he was doing his war dance on my bare belly button. I near bout croaked when I peeked down inside my shirt to see what was making all the fuss.. I didn't slap it , but instead made a fast grab and pulled it away from my body before crushing it in my shirt. I just knew I was bit, but wasn't . No more V neck T's for me. I'd like to have a dollar for every spider bit I've ever had. Between weed-eating a large cemetery and a half dozen other country properties, lots of fishing, hunting and metal detecting out afield and living in an ancient farm house full of spiders, I must get bit a dozen or more times a year. Have only had a few bites get any worse than what you show in your picture, but they took well over a month to finally heal up.

I used a small sleeve as a reservoir for the Hydrogen Peroxide and just held it there while itm bubbled away the "crud".I took about 10-20 minutes just watching TV with my leg up holding it there.I'm sure I could have rigged something less leak prone but it works. Bit cumbersome but it was really good at getting the damaged tissue clean. I covered it with a band aid for the 1st few days but now it dries out between treatments & the pain has been gone for days. Still some minor swelling & a small crater. Compared to the last spider bite I had this one is doing much better.

Thanks for the input. IMHO the Hydrogen Peroxide trick is one of those home remedies that has a lot of fact behind it.And it works...
