spray on bed liner coil protector ?????

badarse

Active member
Can anyone recommend a particular brand for spraying the bottom of my coil? It's been talked about here but I don't remember seeing any suggestions as to which brand.

Thanks

Bob

Just go to most any auto parts store and buy any rubber spray. I think it's called undercoating, (not brand name). I've used a couple of different brands and they seem to work the same. Do a test spray on some cardboard and then run your coil over it. I believe I read once that, "some" rubber sprays contain metal particles. I don't know if it's true but, can't hurt. Also 3-5 light coats should be enough. If it gets scuffed up just clean it and give it another coat.

remember that undercoatingl or epoxy will void some warranties. i think it was garrett that said "epoxy ok but undercoating will void the warranty".

Bob I have a 1200 series 8 inch spider coil that I used the undercoat, can't remember the brand just a can setting in the garage that was used up.John gave good advice to test on card board before coating your coil. Most of my coils with scuffs covers removed I never use undercoating, because this can hurt the resale value.Good Luck Ron

I have a question.

How do you get this black bed liner / undercoating off of a coil?

I have a coil that I have to get squared away, it's covered in that stuff.

Thanks

Fishfinder.....Pick up a can of Varsol at any paint store,,soak a rag and that will take it off..Make sure it's Varsol,,Not Laquer thinner...Wash off the coil with dish soap when you have the Bedliner removed...John....

I use Rust-oleum truck bed liner on the bottom of my coils. I chose this brand because others have used it with no complaint. I can not detect it, and it appears to have no affect to the coil's performance whatsoever. I use an Excal in the water at the beach, and fine sand gets in to everything, so the coil cover had to eventually be removed and cleaned to prevent falsing. The more times you remove the cover, the looser it gets, and the more sand it lets in. Now I can use the detector/coil without the cover, no falsing, the coil is lighter, and if it wears down just sand it a little and spray a few coats, let it dry a few days, and it's just like new. I would not recommend doing this if your equipment is still under warranty, or if you plan on selling your coil.

My Sovereign Coil is coated with bed liner and my Excal. I just can not tolerate a coil cover in the surf. But I spray them carefully and try to do a neat job. I have bought some coils that the coil cover never did fit right. And the Suncoast Kid is correct. The more you take it off the worse it gets. Bed Liner works well for me. But then I don't use my detectors every day and my beaches are not that rocky. So what works for one person might not for the next.

ML wont stand by their warranty with BL on it. The metals in some may not be noticable since it moves with the coil..... however ML says they cant tune it properly with those typ of bed liner sprays. So id say even after warranty you might run into a problem with them. If they cant tune it their only option is replace the coil. Ron is right about resale. Ive got a SEF for an Explorer that has been sprayed with one coat and no one seems interested in it at about half the price of a new one. It works perfectly. I personally dont like the stuff to thin and takes several coats. I use the skid plate because i do hunt about every day and have seen the wear that does...... 3 skid plates in less than a year. So now i just use lock tite marine epoxy on the skid plate. I dont know if im one of the lucky ones or not..... but my Xcal II rarely false even in the surf at near max sensitivity with the 10" coil. My 1000 goes nuts around 7ish.

I would never use Bedliner on the bottom of a coil but some do use it,,I would think sand would stick to it and like Ron said it would hurt re-sale..Covers aren't that expensive. We use Varsol to remove tar from cars and a lot of the Bedliner has a tar base..Hopefully yours has the softer Bedliner spray on it with tar base...Good Luck.....John

Thanks lovee.

Honest truth I made a stop and looked for some today.

I read online that Varsol is used as a substitute for kerosene.

Then it hit me...... "Kroil", the maker of the world record holding
penetrating oil, make a tar remover.
I am going to call them and ask for advise on this bed liner headache.

Their products are the best I have ever found.
Some of the biggest users are the aircraft industry and the US Navy.

oops, forgot I'm in California, really hard to get Kroil products here any more.

Ive only used the Duplicolor brand and its hard once applied and sand does not stick to it. Ive used it for a few years now, its not conductive at all as Ive sprayed cardboard with it and then tried to detect it with a detector even more sensitive than a Sov and couldnt pick up anything.
For me its great, it protects the coil with a thin coat that allows me to scrub the coil and not wear any of the coil away and I dont have to remove a coil cover to clean out the beach sand thats accumulated.
I can understand the reasons some wont use it but for me I wont hesitate to spray any coil I use thats headed for the beach. Inland I can see its not so necessary unless your critical about weight savings(any weight at all off the end of the shaft is a blessing. If you dont believe it try swinging your coil with and without a cover and you will see the difference).
Ive never seen the softer bedliner stuff you talk of John but would not put that stuff on my coils if it indeed collected sand. Your saying thats actually applied to truck bed insides? What a nightmare that must be.

Hey Neil,

In my case some nut sprayed the bottom, top, sides, ears,.... the entire coil.

Which coil you ask?

A Troy Super 7.

I rest my case.

Cleaning up this coil represents hours of my life I'll never get back.

Speaking of hours of my life I'll never get back, look at the machine that was attached to this coil.

As received.......

Housing cracked right down the middle.

I spent "5 Hours" cleaning out all the sand and oil, removing the rust, re-soldering wires, repairing the housing......

I'm not saying that everyone who uses bedliner is a butcher, but this guy sure is.

If you want to see what this unit looked like when I was finished with it, just speak up.

I have before and after pictures.

Now that is a real shame to see a detector such as this, sure hope you knew it was this bad when you got it and got a great deal on it. It is bad when you see how some abuse a detector and then complain when it don't work as it should and blame the company that built it.
I have a very good Friend that I got started with the Sovereign XS with the Sun Ray meter and probe (my own I used and upgraded to the XS2) and it was in his car most of its life so it was in extreme heat and cold so the meter was some what melted along with the S-1 probe and I think the 8 inch coinsearch coil was a bit too in places, I don't think he cleaned it one time while he had it as the coil was not white at all, but it was a yellow orange when he traded it back in to me. He done well with this detector and I know he got close to 1500 silver and never missed a beat and made it to the Minelab catalog they put out in 1999 with his first years finds.
Spent a lot of time cleaning it too and checking it out and was able to sell it to one of the locals and it is still going strong.
He went to a Explorer II then a SE Pro and now a E-Trac and I don't know how many times he tells me it is not working right only to find out the coil cover is full of dirt and water and think he finally got it though his head you have to clean the dirt out once in a while to make sure it works like it should.
This guy does great when he and another Friend go out on the weekends and last weekend some where in Minnesota in a public ball field in 2 different towns they got 100 pieces of silver with 5 of them halves, spend 10 hours on Saturday and 12 hours on Sunday, wish I would have been with with the Sovereign GT and maybe I would be posting some great finds too. James has a Explorer XS (actually it his 3rd one as he wore out 2 of them) while Tim uses a E-Trac.
Sorry I got carried away and off the subject, but just want to say some don't take care of their detector until they have a problem, then blame the company that built it.

Hey Rick,
I had no clue at all and paid pretty fair money for it.

The listing said, "working as it should"........

Baloney, I had to send it in for service.

I got ripped off.

Your a straight shooter and excellent seller. I hope you plan on leaving some lousy feedback for that character on the feedback forums if you haven't already. There's NO excuse for that! BTW...that CoinSearch coil I bought for you seems to be a hot one, I really like it and use it the most. Were you able to get another for your Sov? HH George

Hey George!

Good to hear from you.

I saw where you posted that you are having good luck with that coil!
That's Great!

And no, I have to go on another quest for a Coinsearch coil to replace that one.
I have been having some bad luck, I had to return the SEF coil I bought from Kellyco.
They are sending a replacement pretty soon here.

Thanks for the good words on dealing with me. I do my best and usually the same
comes back around to me when I need something.

Usually,.....LOL

Talk at you later,
Jim

I know the coil Jim, have had several of those. Great little coil.

Thats a real shame about the condition of the Troy shadow you have there. You might be able to get Tesoro to sell you a new housing, just one close to that and you could drill it out and paint it, fix it up nice. I dont think you can get those decals anymore though but you never know. I think thats a standard Umax control housing.

Sorry to see you got burned on this deal.
