Steel pennies?

Do you think most of them that have been lost have corroded so bad they would not be recognizable? I am going to open a little window on the park pattern and see if I can find some of them.

When I was a kid 10 years old in 1957 it was a standing Joke to pass off a steel penny to someone because we all thought or considered it to be junk. Nobody wanted to be caught dead with one in his pocket because all the other kids would laugh at you. I know myself I would litteraly through it away ( where ever I was standing) so I'm sure you just might find some. If we only knew we weren't being cheated out of a real copper penny and that someday they might have some value.

Bill i think the only way you would find one is in very dry sand. I have some that were good at one time but they still get rusty just sitting around. Also how would you tell the from a nail when detecting? I will try some on my E-Trac and see what i get for numbers.

I would think that you would be overwhelmed with junk targets before you found one....It would really put your patience and persistence to the ultimate test.

I never thought I would find one but I did only because it was in a hole with 5 other wheaties, it was rusted so bad and you could see a spot on one of the other wheaties where they were stacked. I think that is your best chance of finding one in a pocket spill with other period coins.

When you hunt in that pattern, Is it usually in a constant null? When you are in null do you slow way way down?

Ok, I tried the pattern today for the steel pennies......Too much iron fell in that little window. I gave up on it quickly.....;o)

It really just depends on the site. I would say it has never been in a constant null. It may null some depending how trashy it is but that dont seem to really matter. It seems to find the good stuff anyway.....;o) I do not go real slow but I do try to investigate everything that may be a good target. Most of the places I hunt are full of everything from iron to pull tabs, can slaw, beaver tails, etc. If I were to hunt in a strictly iron infested site I would probably not use this pattern or I would test it against TTF.

So it looks like they do corrode pretty bad. There are probably a lot of them in the ground but they probably blend right in with the other iron.

Picture is horrible but you can see the date 1943 and the edges are ate a bit. Still strange that it was readable

The Etrac has the ability with the TRASH setting on high to see through and even if it is nulling out over an area a good target will still signal on through for you Bart you really don't have to slow down anymore than what your doing already which is fairly slow compared to other brands..

I live in Michgan close to the Canadian border. VERY close. Do you know all their pennies nickels dimes and quarters now are all steel? Going to miss a bunch of money.

We are at the other side of the Nation very close to Canada, about 20 minutes away
The only Canadian coins I enjoyed finding are the old Silver ones
I understood the value of loonies and toonies but now with STEEL there is no need to travel across the border:thumbdown:

However, the husband also scuba dives and detects and he has found cannon balls and buttons from 1812:super:

I run pretty wide open and have found two steelies. One with my SE close to a beaver tail and one with my eTrac close to a pre-1920 wheat. Both were found because of the odd sound rather than screen display. I have yet to find one on purpose, but the day is coming I'm sure.
