"STOMPING METHOD" Gets More Coins, Less Junk :twodetecting:

I accidentally discovered a way to distinguish old rusty bottle caps from real coins. I was hunting some real old parks, just loaded with old rusty bottle caps several years ago, and was ready to give up as many others had. Something was strange about those bottle caps? Once they were out of the ground, most would remained sounding like bottle caps. But, the odd one, after missing it the first time with my digger trying to retrieve it, changed from reading as a bottle cap to reading as a coin, either copper or silver. Why? My guess is that the copper or silver coins over time developed a layer of oxides around itself in the soil matrix. Some people have called it the "HALO EFFECT". And this developed layer changed the original conductivity from reading as a coin to now reading as a bottle cap. Well, if a person could break this halo while the coin was in it's original lost position, the conductivity should change it from reading as a bottle cap to reading as a coin.

So, I spent the next hour stomping real hard on top of my bottle cap readings, and low and behold, out of some thirty bottle cap hits, 3 of them changed there conductivity from reading as a bottle cap to a coin reading. I dug them and out came 3 old silver coins. I was ecstatic! I broke the code....

So, in summary, if you don't want to dig all targets, or end up in a very old area littered with those old bottle caps, stomp your foot over the target real hard, the coins will start reading as coins. Also, if you get iffy signals, the ones where the target bounced back between iron and coin, give it a stomp too! more often then not, it will now read as a coin or iron.

Hey, what the heck... I'll give it a whirl.

I am serious.....this ain't no joke. Once you break that halo on the target, you get a lot more accuracy from the conductivity readings on your metal detector.

It might look a little goofy stamping in the target, but it works. Just wait until some others give their anecdotal experiences on this. One already has on the "Other" official Garrett Forum.

Up here in Canada we have a well known folk singer called "Stompin Tom". Now we are proud to say we have a well known detectorist called "Stompin John"

All jokes aside. thanks for the tip. I'll just look over my shoulder before stomping though. I'd hate someone to think that I was losing my marbles. Perhaps I'm already too late.
Mick Evans.

i remember seeing you post this a wile back John i try ed it & it works well & it has the added bonus of keeping those curios people away especially if you mumble wile stomping :heh:

I will try this as well John, I have a boyscouts camp here. The soil is loaded with old rusty bottle caps.

Remember hearing this one before - imagine getting carried away by jumping up and down (both feet) hundreds of times on a target and some bystanders watching - I'd just tell them for a moment a thought of my ex crossed my mind:huh:

I can here it now... " There is that nut again, jumping up and down Trying to bring the coins out of the Ground" Some of the people already think things about us. Now we are going to try and prove it.

if the ground is soft & you"v got a bit of wieght to ya all ya need to do is put your heel on the target area & push down that"ll keep those bizybodys happy :heh: i quite ofton do this with those iffy deep silver/iron hits if it makes the signal more silver i dig if more iron i leave it.

Yep it works, somebody told me to do it back in the beginning of the year. Maybe it was Uncle Willy or Awhistler, I can't remember who.

You try that down here in the southland ( Az. to GA. and any where in between ) in the summer time and you'll most likely end up
with a broken leg or foot! Ground is like a rock unless there has been a good bit of rain and I don't think you could stomp hard
enough to do any good. Maybe drive your car/truck back and forth over the target would help? Mmmmm have to give that a try.

Thats interesting and tempting, but im with Graw on this one, my knees could not handle it. H.H. Kevin
