Stop the giggles

Newbie here to forum and detecting. Would like to say hello to everyone. I just bought my first detector ever and I see I'm in over my head.... I took it out of box and proceeded to nuke the yard in short order with wife giggling at me every time I looked her way. I did managed to pull up a nice handful of nails and one penny... I purchased an f75 and I may need help from time tested members as it is more than I can wrap my head around at this point... I used factory settings machine came with and that notches out iron so I'm a little confused why I get beeps on nails. Any help would be appreciated thank you.

Sharky, you picked a slightly complicated machine to start with. The 75 is a hot/sensitive/fast unit. YOU WILL LEARN IT WITH PATIENCE AND USE. Read the manual until you understand most of it. Don't give up on it it's a really good detector. You will, in time, learn the lingo of metal detecting if you stick with it.

The factory settings on the older 75's are disc 10, sens 60, no notch (set @ 1), 3 tone. The newer programed ones the disc is set at 15, no notch (set @ 1).

NOTCH FEATURE ; If you have discrim set to take out iron, then if you notch iron, it brings iron back in. In other words, say for example you just want to find nickels, you disc out everything then notch nickels back in. Or you want to find everything but nickels, you run 0 disc then notch out just nickels. Notch is just another disc feature for going in between the discrimination settings, I never use notch. Not many people who are long time users with the 75 run it like this.

I have had mine since it came out and run it 0 disc, sens max (if area lets me) 4 tone. These settings are for old coin & relic hunting in iron nail infested areas. Nails can be a problem for many a detector, especially bent nails or nails that still have their points.

Dig many targets and make a mental note. Play around with it like you do to learn other things (like a computer for instance) until it becomes clear. Ask questions on the forums, many knowledgeable experienced people here who are more than glad to help.

Oh, my wife and family did the same thing, but once you start finding old coins and jewelry, you won't care what they think and their opinions will change. My son made me laugh by saying "dad, you went from cool to being a nerd". He said it jokingly, I think.
When and if you get hooked on this hobby make sure you do your chores first and fit in time with your wife and family.

Have at it and have fun!

Orange crocs, black knee high polyester socks, some yellow stripitty shorts, a blue checkitty shirt, some zinc oxide on your nose, suspenders are a must too. There! NOW you look cool!
SteveO's last paragraph is really important! If you get good and hooked, this will be the biggest challenge for you to master. Good to have you here, Good Luck!

Welcome to the forum and metal detecting.
First of all you started out right, play around in the yard. First thing you need to learn is how to do the factory reset and I would do that often at first just so you don't get way out of wack. The next thing you need to learn is how to ground balance, this will settle your detector down so that you are not getting a lot of ground noise. Just to add to Steve O, I would not mess with notch settings until you get some experience and some day you may find a need for it. So save notching for last.

Now before you completely destroy your yard, you may want to get some test items, coins, pull tab, small piece of foil and nail and place them on top of the ground one at a time and run you detector over them. This will give you a feel for what the detector will do. At this point I would work with the disc control on these test items and see how it acts as you disc out an item.

Try not let it get the best of you, I have had mine for over a year and I still read through the manual and test things in the yard.

Good luck,

Ron in WV

You have come to the right place. Lots of good guys here! Great info here.

Fisher F-75 settings

#1..While holding the Red button depressed, and the trigger switch pushed forward with you finger.. Turn the F75 on.. This resets to factory settings. Release both switch and trigger after a few seconds.
!B. Once machine on..Hold trigger forward... and not touching the ground BOB the coil up and down 1" from ground to about 12 " above ground with coil flat over the ground. This will Ground Balance the F75. You will see a number on screen.. 60's to 70's number is pretty normal. Make sure nothing is in the ground where your bobbing up and down.
#2. Don't do anything else for a few hunts.. Yes you will hit some nails... If You must, turn the discirmination up to get rid of more nails, and iron.

#3... Unless you "Fully" understand the notch feature....Leave it alone Should read #1 when you scroll down to notch on the screen.

LOL...... :poke:

Thanks everyone for the tips. I got to play with it today at a park. The good news is I have much improved on my digging skills. Still not much in the way of coins but it was fun just the same. I will go back tomorrow and try again with reset values and ground balancing as per Eltons advice with maybe the exeption of lowering the sensitivity down some for awhile then raising it as I get more use to the sounds. Blessing all and I will keep ya posted with progress.

I was going to suggest lowering the sensitivity some just to quiet it down until you are getting your head around the F75 more; but it sounds like you are thinking your way through it already!! Excellent!!!!

And welcome aboard here.
Cheers,

Welcome Sharky, if you want to speed up your learning, click on the search link. Enter F75*...thats right, use the asterisk or it won't work. Select....exact words.....select....all dates. You will be in F75 information heaven. Lot's of great info will show up......from newbie level to super advanced. Good Luck:)

There are worse reactions from the wife and worse times to get them. Moving on. No one mentioned the coil. I am assuming you got the 11 dd that is fairly standard on the F75. If at all possible get a hold of a 5 inch coil. Life and finds will improve exponentially and also a lot. The reduced area that a smaller coil sees will allow focus and reduce the overwhelming amount of multi-target responses. Another bonus is that pinpointing becomes almost automatic- IE easy. Recognizing and recovering a target is what it is all about. When you can do that comfortably THEN think about depth and coverage from a bigger coil.
Just my two cents, but they are Wheaties

I think that one should be in the manual, excellent idea.

I ran my 5" for a long time and I was about ready to throw the big old 11" over the hill.

They'll be giggling a different tune when you start popin some fine stuff outa the earth. hang in there. Patience and dig a lot. The more you throw against the wall, the more sticks.

Welcome to the Forum and good luck with your new machine + stick with it!

You pick a top of the line detector, with top of the line features/abilities that need to be learned.

I started out about 6 months ago with a Minelab X-Terra 705 (mid range machine). Never doig any metal detecting before, I was a little overwealmed and can only imagine how you feel. Some tips?:

--Read the manual
--Dig everything. You'll soon figure garbage from good (you'll get sick of digging garbage and start learning what garbage is)
--Air test indoors. is it as accurate as outside? NOPE! but it will give you an idea how the F75 reats to differnet coins, just, bottle caps, siler, gold, etc.
--Create a 'coin garden'. bury some stuff and see how you do going over it the readouts, like an air test, but outdoors in reality.
--Ask questions, it's amazing what you will learn.

I upgraded my X-Terra 705 about a month ago to an E-Trac with about $1000 in coils/pinpointers/etc, and I am kind of starting all over again...relearning.

Why am I on the F-Series page? I have a Fisher F2 as my back-up machine. I use it when I am off and the day may call for rain (I'd rather toast a $200 machine than a $1500 machine). The F2 is a great little machine and in my opinion best bang for a buck, and if the other F-Series detectors are like the little F2? they must ROCK! I run the F2 as hot as I can for where I am detecting and it is amazing!

I am thinking about getting a new F75 LTD and running two main machines (E-Trac/F75LTD) and getting an AT-Pro as my back-up for rainy days.... :)

I don't know the F75 well, but I am sure it has some good stock-coin programs and you just have to #1 not give up, and #2 learn the machine.

You are very lucky to start off with such a great machine on that price-point., and as I learned from my 705, practice and when it starts clicking, you will definately have the 'bug'.
