Sun Ray probe mount preference?

DirtFlipper

New member
Hi,

I have a Sun Ray probe to mount on my Explorer SE. Looks like the options are either along the battery back or on top of the upper shaft. I'm used to the probe being on the upper shaft on my 'other brand' detector, but was curious what Explorer users favored. Any preference? (maybe weight, balance, access, etc).

I have mine mounted along the battery area because I feel the weight/balance is more evenly distributed.

I tried it on the upper shaft for a short spell...but to me...it made the SE more bottom heavy that it already is.

I think everyone will have different opinions on this.

Mines right along side where the switch is. Easy to reach when digging because it's right beside you and not behind you a foot or so. I use the Swingy Thingy so all the weight is suspended from the front of my chest on a harness. Eliminates weight and balance as an issue for me. Jim

I had it on the inside between my leg and the bat. compartment but in those muddy areas it would hit my leg and I'd get all muddy.

I had mine on the battery pack and kept forgetting to turn it off. Moved it to the shaft by the switch and 99% of the time now, I remember to turn if off. When it was on the battery pack, it also got dirt on my clothes. Not so mounted to the lower shaft. I just loop the wire up over the screen so it's behind by wrist when I am holding the handle.

I had the same issue The detector came with the probe attached to the Battery. I moved it becasue it was inconvienient to the top of the shaft. Now I never forget to turn it off. I used to go around detecting the keys in my pocket thinking that I was detecting what was in the ground.

I have them along the battery compartment on my SE and E-Trac..I also feel it balanced the weight out alot better.Maybe being taller is the only reason i noticed that..i havent had a problem with it hitting on my side or leg..My pouch is on my left side, digger on my right towards my back more.Best thing to do is try both areas..Zip strips are cheap..Cant go wrong with the Sun-Ray in my book tho..HH

Thanks for all the reponses!

I just got an Explorer SE, but am very used to hunting with the Sun Ray probe on my other detector. Wouldn't dream of being without one.
