Sun Ray X1 E-Trac Installation Mod

All credit goes to Shayne from this forum. . I did not want the coil wire wrapped around the shaft like the sun ray probe forces us to do. But i did want the probe..... So Shayne sent me pictures and details of his mod and i did almost the same to my E-Trac. I think it looks so much better then the sun ray installation but you decide..... Sorry for the crappy photos....ipod touch camera sucks...

Kinda limits how short you can make the shaft, or does it? It is a neat mod though. Are ya using a rubber grommet in the hole ya made for the coil wire to come out?......NGE

If you needed it totally collapsed then yes it would but i am kind of tall so I use it most of the way out...I just couldn't stand the way it looked with the wire wrapped around it. I am trying to find a grommet that fits...Right now I have rubberized silicone around edges and electrical tape around coil wire where it comes out...

is the main coil attached "upside down" or did i put my etrac together wrong?

I would love to have the ability to rapidly change coils on my Explorer, E-trac that the Sunray allowed. I understand why some of you would want the wire inside the shaft. I miss my Sunray not only because it is a great pin pointer but my hunting time has been slowed way down when switching out coils because I have lost my ability to rapidly switch coils.

That mod if very nice and clean though. Good job.

Your are absolutely correct! thanks for pointing that out! & Thank you mastereagle22!

and went back to attaching the probe to the side of the battery compartment because mounting it to the top side of the upper shaft like that quickly ruins the latching mechanism. A lot of dirt gets into the latch for the lower shaft that way.

Not sure i follow you... mounted on top of unit how would dirt get in?

It gets into the latch on the bottom of the upper shaft.

Glad to see you completed your mod! I have used mine on the beach and in the dirt for the better part of 6 months now - without any locking mechanism problems. Of course, I clean my eTrac after every hunt. The only negative aspect of the mod is that it reduces the distance the lower shaft will collapse into the upper shaft by approximately 6 inches. When I put my detector in the bag, I just separate the upper and lower shafts - leaving the coil and X1 control box connected - then I just fold it in half. If you really want some strange feedback, tell everyone you are going to do my rifle bipod mod next. The extra weight on the rear actually serves to balance out the heavy pro-coil and X1 mod. Not to mention, I can swap the bipod to my rifle in about 15 seconds when hunting season starts! :usmc:

Thank's and you too! Oh and thanks again for all the help doing this. Bad ass Vette by the way!

One of the main reasons I love the Sunray probe. Each one of my coils has it's own lower shaft . I can switch a coil in seconds

Most of my E-Trac friends like the X-1 just for that reason..fast coil changes..tho the mod looks way cool

No new coils for me so i am ok with the extra work if I ever do get another coil. Spent enough as it is...:nopity:
