Howdy,
The weather was just too darn nice this evening, so I tried one more time this weekend. Decided to try a couple new (to me) spots and roll the dice a bit. Probably ended up driving more than swinging, but so it goes.
Started with the Pro coil, but I could tell right away that I was into too dense a signal field to have my best chance. So after awhile I switched to the 8x6 SEF. Lots of shallow targets, which I spot checked just to see (all clad). I was waiting until I got something with some depth on it, but just wasn't coming up with much. Got a couple Wheats for my troubles, then started the slow inevitable line back to the vehicle. About half-way there I caught just a whisper of a chirp. And I mean really faint! It would break up doing the wiggle, but it would repeat enough, and even when rotating the coil. I cranked the sensitivity up to 30 just to see if it would lock on a bit better, and it did see to hang on a bit better.
Seemed fair enough to at least open up and see what the X-1 would tell me, so I flipped up a generous plug and gave it a wave of the probe. Nothing. And this was at maybe 5 inches. So I opened up the bottom even deeper and removed some dirt to get better depth. Then tried the probe again. It really sang out this time! I caught a glimpse of silver while moving some more dirt, so I knew I had something. Had to be pushing 9 inches, so I was hoping for some age, but it turned out to be a Merc. So I think that provided a pretty good clue of what I'd be up against at this site (that, and a Zincoln at around six inches!).
Oh well, it was still a nice evening out.
