Sunray X-1 Excess Coil Cable Mod

well after a day of failure with my new coil I figured I couldn't go to bed without contributing at least something productive to the forum. I could be called an "obsessive compulsive" type person when it comes to getting things done the way I like them. One thing that has been annoying me since getting an X-1 probe for my machines is I never figured out a "clean" solution to my coil wires. After a day of being annoyed with my hunt I couldn't got to bed without "improving" something. Below are pictures of what I did to my lower rods for my coils in order to make my coils look more "clean." I didn't like the extra wire hanging, or having to be electrical-taped to the rod before. All I did was dremel the lower rod out (at 11 inches from the eyelet at the bottom of the shaft) and I think it makes for a much "cleaner" solution. I don't know if any of you out there are as much of a perfectionist as I am, but having spare cable has been bothering me for a while and this seems to be the best solution I could come up with. HH -Marc

PS the first pic shows the "ugly" ways that we had to secure our coils. The rest of the pics show the way that they could look after doing this "mod"

You cut a hole in the CF rod?! Not smart, not smart at all. That will significantly weaken the lower rod.

Thanks for your replies. I'm not sure what the problem would be with drilling a hole in the back of the rod Jason. I left "lip" from the curved edge and just drilled the flat surface on the back to maintain structural integrity. I don't put any weight on my rods (I wouldn't know why anyone would) so I don't understand why "weakening" would be a problem, please explain if you have experience. The hole is very minimal, especially for a material with the strength and rigidity of carbon fiber. Thanks Ray-Mo for your input. I'm glad someone who has done this let me know that it works. I haven't seen someone do this and so I wasn't sure what the long-term results would show. HH -Marc

Did the same thing with mine but upper rod si i just get the end out to attach to the x-1 works great. But have ended up removing both of my x-1 from my detectors and just using the garrett.Extra weight an issue.Nice job

Thanks. Yes, I have seen many upper rod modifications. The reason for me modifying the lower rods is because I change coils quite frequently and so the upper-rod-mod was not an option for me. This way allows for quick and easy coil changes. I am lucky enough to not be bothered by the extra weight of the X-1, but I am only 25 so we will see in a few years. I still have my pro-pointers in my bags in case a day comes where my arm can't keep up. Thanks for posting. HH -Marc
