SUNRAY X-1 Probe feedback used with Safari?

I am currently using a Garrett Pro pointer with my Safari. Hearing great things about X-1 probe - I know how it works, and can see the potential. Will it make target recovery that much more efficient than with the Garret I am currently using? Worth the $220 or so??? Any one using this with their Minelab. Any feedback?

I can't see spending that much and adding more weight to the Safari. They are a great pinpointer, but the Garrett is just so handy to have in your pouch and does what it is designed to do.

Hello- I totally agree with the posts above by not adding the Sunray X-1 Probe. You're not gaining that much in portability, so why add the extra weight to the Safari? The thing weighs enough as it is. I had asked this same question to the dealer before I bought my Safari package and he recommended the Garrett instead of the X-1 because of the added weight issue and very little gain otherwise. He's well versed when it comes to the MD world and I feel that he gave me some excellent advice throughout. IMO, the Garrett Pro Pinpointer works very well and is just as portable as the X-1, it's just not attached to the detector. Like the old saying goes, don't fix something that isn't broken.

Good day,
John

So happy for the advice. I asked myself the same question since i love my Garrett. I'll take the 200 and buy another coil to play with. That's just like getting a new toy to me.

Just an fyi, someone mentioned this once but today I tried it. I had a coin signal that was just beyond the reach of propointer so I put my digger in the same hand as the pinpointer.
It started beeping slowly because it was picking up the digger a little. I then checked the hole again and was able to pick up the coin as the beep rate increased.

I have been keeping my digger and my propointer in my large minelab pouch. This makes it much faster access than the standard holder.

When I bought the safari I thought it would be light, But it is not as light as I had hoped. Not that I can't handle it, but after hours it does get uncomfortable. I also have a White's xlt which I hadn't used in a long time. Well I used it the other day and it seems a lot lighter than my safari, and it is more comfortable. I am not saying I am getting rid of my safari, I like being able to have two great machines for different terrain. It is also nice if I want to bring my brother along, as he doesn't own a machine. Getting back to the pinpointer, I like the fact that it beeps and vibrates, also the led light has come in handy in low light situations. I got mine on sale for $127.00 last october. I was also thinking about the Sunray at the time. You have to send them the uppershaft, and they fit the probe onto the shaft for you. As far as I know they won't just sell you one. Please don't quote me on that, as that was only the impression I got from what I read. Whenever I put the probe that close to any metal object it beeps like mad. Also sensitive enough to pick up old square nails, and even tiny rust fragments. Sky1, can you help me get a better understanding of your method? I would like to try it, especially if it makes recovery a little easier. Thanks. Ron

I might be wrong but I think the Garrett probe is the only one that works around multiple frequency machines well. When I purchased my Safari the probes I had drove the machine crazy and I was not going to turn off the machine everytime I recovered a target. And if you have used your Safari very long you will be recovering a lot of targets. So I got myself an X-1 probe from Sun-Ray. I won't be without one unless they come up with something better. All the adjustments you have to your machine is in the 1 inch probe. Easy locating and recovering targets. Push the pin-point button if you need to and there is no extra digging. Now as I said before I did not have a Garrett probe or I may not have an X-1. The weight is not noticable to me and the performance of the probe compensates more than any weight issue. But everyone should try a probe. :minelab:

Good point. When ever you Noise Cancel, make sure you turn on your handheld pinpointer first. The centek will drive a Safari nuts if you do not turn it on before Noise Cancelling.

My Garret has never interfered with my Safari. I believe it is designed that way. So that is a good thing. I just wonder how useful it is the fact that the x-1 actually routes through the tones of the detector. I suppose it would be quite useful in a trashy hole. But I agree I can not see it adding much over a quality pinpointer like the garret. Although I have read read some posts from people who have the sunray stating that they could not imagine detecting without it. Still based on the majority of these posts - i can not see spending the money until I see more on the x-1.

There was certainly no intention ment to bash the Sunray. I was looking at the Sunray first and I may still get one in the future, all said I enjoy using the Garrett Pro Pointer.

Ronaldj2: My son has a Whites V-3 and has used a hand held probe so much he hardly ever uses his Sun Ray probe. He likes the SR but keeps taking his handheld ones. He likes the Garrett because it is small. I liked my Pistol Probe and it goes deep but after I got the SR I just put it back in the box. Whatever a person likes and has success with is all that is important anyway. HH :minelab:

Heck, if you wanna have a probe attached to the detector, just put some velco on and attach the propointer to the upper shaft. Just a thought.
