T-2 Resets or Turns Off

I finally had a chance to use my T2 today only to have a problem. It seems like the unit keeps turning off, or resetting to the default (turning off and on again.) when bumping off anything. There is obviously a bad power connection. I tried a fresh set of alkelines just to make sure it was not the batteries. I am curious if anyone else has run into this problem? I guess a call to Teknetics is in order.

You might try carefully putting a car key into each of your battery springs, and gently stretching it out a tiny bit. The springs aren't long enough to keep the batteries against the contacts, when you bump it against something. I also have that problem when I set it down to dig, should it fall over. First Texas will replace those springs for you, should you send it in. I have two and I need to have that done to one of mine. You might also notice that the foamy hand grip is starting to split.

Seems to me that there was a problem early on with weak springs in the battery compartment. I believe that had been corrected long ago.

I own one of the early T2s that have that problem. My cure was to put a short piece of weatherstripping on each side of the battery compartment so it fit against both cells on each side. I think I also stretched the springs a bit. Never had a problem since and didn't need to send it in.

There's some variation in bateery dimensions from one brand to the next. If it's a used detector, possibly it's an early unit like mine. The previous owner may have used longer cells or was not too careful when replacing them. You might be now trying shorter cells and things are looser than they should be.

Sounds like a battery spring problem to me, which as others have stated was a problem with some of the earlier T2s and certain types of batteries. Stretching out the springs seems to work for most people. Another thing to do is don't leave batteries in the machine if it is going to be sitting. Removing the batteries gives the springs a chance to relax so to speak so they will be snug the next time the machine is used.

I'd still look there first, simply because it was a known problem in the past and is something you can check yourself. Remove the cover and bump the bottom of the unit's arm rest. Try to watch and see if the batteries seem to move or lose contact and if the problem occurs. The cure is just a short piece of weatherstripping that stops the batteries from moving. Finger pressure on the batteries might help stop it to show you that's the problem.

It's possible you have a coil issue instead. To isolate that, remove the stem and coil and try bumping either the unit or coil and see which one is the culprit, also try wiggling the cable and connector, etc.

Beyond that, it could be a flaky solder connection or loose connection or internal part, but at least you may be able to exonerate the coil or batteries. If you need to send it in this info will help the repair tech track it down.
