Tabman/Revier's revenge! :ranting:

Didja all see Tabmans post yesterday.?. He found TWO gold rings at a park, in the dirt...the backstory is the pictures he posted showing a pile of pulltabs! Between him digging pulltab gold, and Revier digging 3 gold class rings in the zinc range, well, a fellow just has to pay attention and modify hunting behavior accordingly. So today I went to that foily, tabby, tree rooty, junked up park, thinking about how these posts can affect our styles and success...I hit this 5.6gr 925 ring underneath a big maple where folks would go in the shade...it read a tight 91, 3" deep, I thought it was a stack of q's, so commenced to stab away, did not hit them, so I stood back up and reswept...hmmmm, nice tight ping, no washout signal like a flattened crown cap gives...91 is one point lower than a Half, so I thought ring, or maybe old silver Q. and carefully poked around until I hit it. F70 low sens, -3 thresh, 63ground balance, 1 disc, DP tones. I like this forum, the inspiration and tricks for success make it worthwhile, though the zinc and pulltab digging is a real pantload for sure!..

Congrats on the .925 ring! How does the -3 on the threshold help you?

Congratz!
Also remember that I have found several small gold rings at foil.

*&*%$ Revier! Now you have to go ahead and say dig all the foil too? I hold you personally responsible for every rotten zinc I've dug this year...and dont think I dont mutter a tinkers cuss with your name attached to it on every one I stab! One of these days I'm sure I'll get a big gold surprise and you will be exhonorated! As far as those two gold pulltabs Tabman dug, man, that just makes life really tough on a cladstabber like me trying to beat Zeeks last years coin count! Thos tab signals are sure going to mess with a guys head for a while! So at least I have two of you guys to cuss at I suppose, as I dig tabs and pennies... I'm heading out tomorrow, and I sure hope its your day of reprieval! Lets all get out tomorrow, and find some GOLD!~

oh hey, Miserman...the -3 thresh really makes a steady hunt for me, no chatter, solid signals and no need to even use the pinpoint button, especially in heavy trash...I've tried going up to 0 or even positive, but I get a lot of false signals and chatter.unless I'm in real clean soil, which seldom seems to be the case..seems I can run -3 or -2 around here with a low sens (50's) and just whack the poo out of anything in the 5" on up depth.even totlottin up next to and under the iron, I can hear signals... I'm speed sweeping most of the time, really hunting jewelry along with the clad to pay for coffee. Someday I'll try deep silver hunting, but Its gonna haveta be getting with one of the guys that does it, and listening to what they do in a real world setting for me to sort of figure it out...Mud

Hi Mud!,
I notice you use -3 threshold setting most of the time and I can understand the pleasure of little EMI or falsing problems. In my soil I can get by with 0 threshold and 60 to 70 sensitivity with little problem. It is nice to be able to get 3 or more inches more depth that way. I have found many nice old silver coins as well as 1800's non silver coins. I have found many coins at 10 inches and a few as deep as 12 inches. I feel these settings are giving me the max on my machine. I don't do much clad hunting unless I am bored and don't want to drive very far to some old sights that have a history of old coins and artifacts. Good luck with your hunting and keep the informative and entertaining stuff coming.

Mud, you GOTTA try going after the oldies. When you find a 1700's - 1800's coin, especially silver, man, it's an indescribable feeling.

Hey Coinseeker and SteveO...You know, I think I'll give that a try today...I met a fellow hunting this week with a minelab, we both started hunting an old school together, nice guy, maybe a hunting partner for me, since he works a second shift, and I generally hunt mornings...Anyway, he found a merc at 10". Said he's been detecting since he was 13yrs old, and is in his mid 30's now...so he really knows his machine. I'll set up a higher sens, and try to go as positive as I can on the thresh at a place I've found silver and buffs at before..deepest coin in the dirt for me has been about 8"...Conditions are just perfect this am, real damp soil, cool weather...great for an all day hunt!. Good Luck all! :detecting:

I have to say Mud, I'm a little excited for you. Do you have a DD coil for your f-70? The reason I ask is; if you get the chance to hunt around a old 1700's- 1800's house, the DD will separate better than the concentric. Don't let that stop you though...just a suggestion.

SteveO, yep I have the 11"dd on right now...I was just out for a few hours, gonna eat and hit it again...anyway, I was running sens71, 0 thresh...hitting deep targets, all clad, but deeper than normal..including some nickles, actually had to dig a few plugs if you can imagine that! gotta coupla bucks already..I did have to push the HZ button to get it to settle down...thanks for the advice and encouragement! :buds:

Hey Mud ,thanks for your explanation on the -3 threshhold. It does make sense on that type of hunting. That's another reason why i like Fisher, you can easily change settings to match the type of hunting you are doing!

Nice job on the ring mud good luck with the deep coin seeking it's very rewarding!!! ...hh rick n mi

Just a fact of life about 40 percent or so of gold rings lost are thin gold womans rings some with nice stones and yes they fall in the foil area of all detectors...
Odds are better with foil as there are a heck of a lot of more tabs out there than foil both round and square...Oh my aching back....
