Tall grass/weeds

Well we all I'm sure have had the privilege of mding in the parks with mowed grass or homes with the same manicured yards but what about old farmsteads, woods, etc with tall grass or weeds? How or what is the best way to deal with this. I for one am only in my second summer with a etrac and would like to move off the parks to some old homesteads and places with taller grasses. Turn up the sensitivity? Any hints would be appreciated.

Thank,
Marlowe

For me, I just try to hit it in early spring. That way the snow has matted last years grass down. Another thing around here is we still have cattle in until April on some spots that I hunt. Makes it nice when they graze it short. Its a small window of opportunity. I have seen others take a weedeater to areas around the house so they could swing.

I heard of a guy who used a 4 x 8 sheet of plywood with a hole in the center, he would lay it down to smash down the tall grass and detect and when he got a signal he would slide the hole over to the signal so he could dig, now that is a bit too hardcore for me...lol

On one site this year I took my tractor and 7' mower over there and mowed what I could down. Got back over there one time since and pulled a 1901 indian and a 1921 wheat and have had a solid week of rain. Another cellar hole 1/2 mile from me blew down in a cylone in 1909 and the farmer gave me some roundup and 2-4 D to spray the grass with and I plan on doing that shortly. Abandoned forgotten sites are fun to hunt because the probability of them being hunted before is slim to none. Good luck.

Thanks for the replies. Best to go out before the grass/weeds get long I guess. We have had a very tough spring in Montana this year. Winter does not want to give up its grip. Rainy, cold every weekend.

mtrames,

I live here in North Idaho and all our fresh water lake and river beaches are under water
due to flooding and the grass, weeds are high. Bummer.

I am not saying to do this but, I heard of someone setting a small brush fire in the woods somewhere to rid the place of undergrowth, he didn't get caught and he returned to the spot and cleaned up:surprised: now, I would say that is getting pretty desperate:hot:...........NGE
