Excellent find - Connecticut copper. A different variety is shown in W & E Treasures mag., April 2008, page 30.

excuse my ignorance but what is the coin and what were the circumstances in its recovery?

It's a rare unknown type of Conn. copper and the coin was found next to a france siliver coin that they punched holes to make button out of it . The depth was down around four inches in some blacken soil .
