Thank Goodness my original XS is still running GREAT!

I have watched the Explorer II come out, the SE and now the E-Trac and all I can say is, I sure have saved a lot of money by still using the original XS, that has only ever been back to the factory once for the free replacement of the cracked housings that the XS had the first few years. I surely do not think I personally can complain that I am not finding targets I should have, since the vast majority are relatively shallow anyway and the homesteads I hunt are not usually full of modern junk! I also know I am still finding outstanding finds, so why change.

I enjoy reading the complaints and the compliments of the new detectors when they come out, and I usually just sit back and smile and think, how much more are the new detectors finding that their old one most likely would have found anyway..... Believe me, I go back many many times to the same sites and I have no doubt that many times if I had a new detector with me I would have credited it with my good fortune, but I know that usually you find what you missed before due the most logical fact, you did not really swing over the exact spot the times before, or ground conditions had changed.
Of course now, if you are now using an Minelab and were using something else before, well, that is a different subject.

Since we all enjoy seeing finds, here is one each of my best for 2008 so far, coin wise and my best relic wise.

The relic is an 1850's photograph that is called a Daguerreotype photograph that required the individual to hold still for up to 10-15 minutes for the exposure time, it is a photo that is silver on a copper plate, it was very corroded when I found it and I did a lot of reading and figured out how to restore it somewhat pretty good by myself. I have been trying to find who the young man was and so far no contacts.

The coin is a 1722 Rosa Americana coin, not too many found, my son found one years ago in much worst shape and I found mine in a freshly ploughed fire ditch. I am interested in hearing from anybody else who might have found one, and if so I have a researcher who would like some details of the find.

I added ths post to my "watched" list so I can find the great restoration info if I need it. Thanks for that.

I really envy you guys who live in colonial areas, what a treat it must be. Our area was steeled by whites in the 1830s. However I have a friend who found an indian camp a few weeks ago while looking in a plowed field for arrowheads. He got out his detector in a spot where he found several points together and pulled 17 colonial flat buttons !!

Thanks for sharing the photos.

Very nice post Don and thanks for the info on how you cleaned up that picture. Very cool indeed.........:clapping: I agree with you 100% about our XS's. I keep finding stuff with mine and until she finally craps out then I see no reason to make the leap with the E-Trac. It's probably a great machine, but time will tell I guess. HH.

Very nice post
I also am hanging in there with my XS.
Just ordered the new coil for it though.

I just started with the new SE Pro Coil in August and do like it, definetly feels better swinging it than the ole original Stock coil, which is still working but falsing when damp outside, not bad for almost 8 years of rugged use.

That Picture turned out GREAT! I can't believe that it has survived all them years without deteriorating. WOW!!! WTG with that find! Nice Coin also! She's an Oldie! As far as the New E-TRAC, I just hunted along side one yesterday and I could get the Targets that it got without a problem, so you have nothing to worry about. My XS is still kickin' and the day it dies, it will be a very sad day. But hopefully that will never happen. Continued Success, Good Luck and HH to you.

Don, Im also still using my XS. The XS has been worth every penny,. Like you, i have watched all the new minelab detectors come out over the years. I like the idea of faster proccesing and recovery on the new ones, i need to sweep really slow with the XS, it takes alot of patience to sweep slow. The arm cup on the XS is garbage, kept breaking. I bought an after market arm cup online, the new arm cup was the best edition i have made to the XS since i bought it. The factory cup had those anoying snap in clips for the strap. New arm cup has a wider strap so when i slide my arm in the strap no longer twists, its metal with built in stand and headphone jack. The new E Trac is very tempting, it sounds as though i would be able to sweep faster with the E trac and not miss targets.

Good Hunting..... BK

Hello John, That's a great restoration program you used on the photo! Would you mind telling me what program it is. I'm working on my genealogy and have alot of pictures to restore. Thanks, EddieB

I've had a couple of XS's in the past and they were one of the best. They forced me to go slow with their slow recovery time which I think helped me to find a lot of older coins. I've had the Explorer II and I really liked it. Now I have the SE and am starting to like it too. You can't beat the Explorers for IDing at respectable depths. They are just fun to use!

Great job on the restoration of that photo. I wouldn't have thought it was possible...I would have probably never even attempted to clean it up that way and just thrown it in with all my other odds and ends I've found in the past. Now you have a nice conversation piece to display. Kudos to you Dan!
