That shiny Spanish metal stuff:yo:

After a nice weekend in Long Island at the Southampton historical society's ADT hunt I got the chance to hunt a potato field that I obtained permission to hunt before heading home. From the moment I pulled up onto this field I was in awe. It just looked like the field of dreams and a detectorists paradise. And I soon found out how right I was. Within five minutes I dug an early flat button. Within ten minutes an early copper that is not yet identified. Then 45 minutes in a real deep 12-47/48 hit. It would not pinpoint and was sometimes a one way hit. So I dug a nice big plug so as to not harm any potential target and I found that real pretty shiny silver disc you see in the top right corner.:surprised: It is a 1826 Spanish 2 reale I believe. A once in a lifetime find for me or maybe not. After digging that coin I must have called everyone I know to brag about it. And continued to swing across the field of dreams. I did not have alot of time left before dark and I still had to backtrack to Montauk where my boss owns a house he kindly let me stay at for the weekend, get showered, eat dinner and pack the car for the 4 hour plus ride back home. So I thought to myself one more good hit and I'm calling it quits. Literally 3 more steps and I get a really loud hit. 12-44 I think and I'm thinking maybe trash?? From a whopping 1 inch down pops this 1785 2 reale. My oldest silver to date. The 2 Spanish silvers posted here may be beat up a little from the 200 plus years of farming but I will always remember these coins because they played an important role in our history and well they are a first for me and they certainly made my year!!! Thanks for looking and HH Etrac Joe

And you didn't call in sick this week????? Dang, you're nice to your boss! That would be a very nice place to swing in! Thanks for the pictures and the great story!

Beleive me I was kicking myself all day. But there again it will leave that much more excitement for the next time.

Fantastic coins Joe ! :beers:

I spent a lot of time in Montauk and on Block Island years ago - a great place to be - I worked on off shore shipwreck diving and charter fishing boats in the summer time.

Congratulations Joe on those amazing finds.
Spanish silver is always such an incredible find.
I'm so happy you were able to get permission from your boss to get onto that small patch of property you told me about at the Artifact Detecting Team's inaugural hunt (see below for more information and to come out and hunt with us over the next few weeks).
It was a pleasure meeting and hunting with you this weekend - everyone had a blast.
I look forward to more fun times in the near future.

Again - welcome to the Spanish silver club.

WOW!!!!!!!! Great finds. Looks like the bigger one was marked to be quartered. I hope I am able to dig one of these some day.

Looks like you have a great site there! The coin in the upper right corner is a King George the 4th One Shilling coin. I found a well worn 1825 this summer so I recognized it right away. Go find some more before the snow hits!

nice hit Joe
wasn't it you that was tellin me on sunday morning that you didn't have any spanish yet?

Thanks Todd.......yes that was me and it feels good to get one but I didnt realize until MAcle pointed it out that the 1826 was infact not Spanish. And I also think Ohio Bud is right on with the 1785 being marked to be quartered. I want to go back for some more. Im hooked on Spanish silver now, and its a pretty nice high!!:smoke: lol

Wow,fantastic and the British silver is much more scarce than Spanish.I was wondering where you had gone off to from the second field, especially after you had said you wanted to hunt until dark. You also got at least a half dozen coppers!I guess you like Long Island.

Thanks Tom, yeah my boss came through with a piece of property he was telling me about earlier in the week and he caught me just before leaving and I had just enough time. Wish I had more time but you know how that goes. Did you guys find anything more at that farm stand?
