The Garrett heat seeker!

Went for a mid afternoon hunt today at my favourite spot. Picked up just over $6 for a 90min hunt. One of the $2 coins that I found gave what appeared to be 2 separate signal in different notches with 2 separate pinpoint hits. I assumed that I had 2 separate targets, so I pulled out the Pro-pointer to check. Just had the one target that was covered by some cut grass. I double checked with the GTI, but no other targets present. Very odd.
The reason for the heading is that it was 41 degrees Celsius when I was hunting. If I'd tried that with the Explorer, from what I read on the explorer forum a couple of days ago, the LCD screen would have blacked out. Never heard of a detector fainting before. I'll go out again tomorrow afternoon as the temp is to hit 44 degrees in town and according to the front page of a major Sydney newspaper, the town west of here will hit 47 degrees, which will make it the hottest place on the planet for the day. Just got to test out Garretts ability to handle the heat.
Hey Lazy. I just saw the news on the TV. I see Melbourne had it's hottest day ever today at 46 degrees! Hope your doing all right.
Actually, the heat is a detectorist friend. Today was the first time in a while I've been able to hunt my favourite site without being annoyed by a bunch of 6 to 10 year old kids coming up, asking endless questions, stepping on the coil and diving on the coins that I find. Gotta love it.

Bad fires in parts of your country.
The heat would not be my friend.
Glad too see that you can get out and detect in the blast furnace type heat.
Like tou suggested that'll keep the ankle biters inside:rofl:
Temp around here are -10 cel. Refreshing !

Sounds like ya had a good day out Mick i all most went out detecting yesterday but my wife said it was to hot so i stayed home & played xbox with my kids. yeah the fires are real bad hope this rain helps them put em out they"er about 30 min drive from my place.
the double beep on the $2 coins is great love it when i"m hunting grass & hear it always turns out to be a $2 coin just under the surface.

It would be interesting to run other brands through similar conditions to see how they play out. Some knobs on detectors don't turn very well in the cold. The push buttons on the Garretts work well in the cold. The Scorpion Stinger is preset and has that nice 3 way toggle switch to flip back and forth in the cold to double check the target. The LCD screens have never froze on me, but they do slow down when it gets extremely cold. I prefer not to use them in the cold, as there could be some issues.

Yesterday was a good day to be lazy. There is supposed to be a good southerly coming though tonight down your way that will cause a 15C drop. I've been watching the news but haven't been able to pinpoint where they are talking about the fires. from what you are saying, they must be on the edge of Melbourne.
They can give you a good heart start at times. I was brought up in the lower Blue Mountains and dad used to be a volunteer fire fighter. The 68 fires were particular bad. I was only 4 bit still remember parts of it. the tree against our house burned. it was only the actions of the neighbour that saved our house. We evacuated by our aunt and uncle. I remember that it was a bedford truck and at the top of the last hill, my uncle offered a drink of water to a very grateful police man who was directing traffic. I must have fallen asleep just after that, but mum told me that a mile on from there, the fire overtook us which caused a major panic. People in the 3 cars in front of us, panicked and ran out of there cars into the fire. The cars were incinerated a mum never found out the fate of those poor souls. When we got onto the flat, which was only anther couple of miles on, we pulled over and my uncle started ripping out the upholstery of my aunty's brand new car, much to her dismay , but it was smoldering.
I hope they get them under control soon as there has been much grief and loss of life caused.
Mick Evans.

Yeah Joel.
These ones have been particularly bad. They have caused the greatest loss of life in 25 years.
I found out later that night, that the temp only got to 38 degrees. During the day, they didn't give the live temp, only the forecast high.
My in laws are experiencing your weather at the moment as they are holidaying in Northern Europe.
Mick Evans.

Hi John.
I actually took my X-terra out today for an hour. It was forecast to hit 40 degrees today. It would have been close. It shut down due to the batteries. They shouldn't have though. Although I hadn't recharged them for a month, they only had a couple of hours on them. I have been using them for 3.5 years though. Both the detector and the batteries felt hot to the touch when I got home.
Mick Evans.
