the playmate

i have an old playmate detector given to me by my grandfather. i don't know what year. the sound coming from it is that loud. he hasn't used it in 20 yrs. is there a way to find out how old it is and a way to possibly fix it?

That is an oldie !
Uncle Willy is the resident expert on the older detector and should have some info on this one .

Who is the manufacturer? Does it work at all? Looks to be an old BFO unit with that single loop coil from the sixties. If it works, when you turn it on it will emit a constant motorboat sound. This sound will increase as you pass it over a target and reach a peak when you are sorta centered over the target and it will pick up everything, even mineralization in tree roots. They are hard to keep tuned, the signal drifts a lot, and wet grass or weeds will drive them nuts.

Turn the unit on with the front button and rotate the back button towards metal until you hear a beat-you want a slow motorboat sound. If it starts squealing when you turn it that direction, turn towards mineral until the beat slows to a slow motorboat sound. Metal should increase the frequency and small paper clips, hairpins and nails should slightly decrease in sound.

garrett electronics is the manufacturer. i get a soft sound only when its tuned in, when im detecting over metal that sound changes but its not very loud. it did work when he put it away 20 years ago.they used it all the time.

Great replies all around.:thumbup:I have one that looks just like that, but it's called The Provider, also made by Garrett. I think mine has acouple more buttons and switches. I also have a Coin Hunter BFO made by Garrett. They're pretty fun to play around with every now and again. They also make good conversation pieces. Oh yeah, and the sounds that they make scare the heck out of the cats. Have fun with it! Good Luck! Happy Hunting!:)

Here's a link to generic Garrett BFO owner's manual:

i get a very soft sound coming out to where i have to put my head up against the head unit. it does seem to detect because the soft motorboat sound goes away if i'm not over any metal. the head unit has a plug for headphones. could this be the reason why i get a soft sound or should it be loud without headphones?

cool old detector i"d love to have a couple of those out in the shed to play around with :)

Some of the old detectors had no speaker and required an ear plug or headphones. Can you locate a speaker on this one?

Bill

the sound is so quiet that i can't hear it unless my head is next to the speaker. when i disconnect the wire from the head unti via the screw in plug the scratchy noise is louder than the detecting sound. so i figure that the speaker is fine.
