The rookie that am Im nervous to change settings

I am real concerned to change the settings what is the best advice you experienced ones to give please not real tech brand new to metal detecting.

Thanks Steve

Steve, I'm not real experienced compared to others. I only just started metal detecting less than 2 1/2 yrs ago, but after I started digging stuff with my ol' beep dig detector I knew I was hooked and wanted a better machine. So after much debate with myself, I opted for the E-trac since it was the newest, most advanced...

Long story short, I knew there would be a significant learning curve coming from a machine with 3 knobs and 1 tone for everything (classic III). It's like anything really, you can just jump in and learn everything by trial & error or do research and have a clear(er) understanding of the machine before ever even powering on. During the month it took me to save the money for the E-trac, I downloaded the user manual and read it several times. I watched videos about explorers (more widespread at the time) and watched the few about the E-trac over and over. I read posts on forums from the people who had them in the field already and asked questions. I also downloaded the Explorer emulator and played with it a bit (E-trac Emulator was not out yet) I soaked up every shred of info about the E-trac and FBS technology that I could...

By the time I had enough money, ordered, and received my E-trac. It was all about getting some hands on with it and familiarizing myself with the controls and what the impact of each setting has on performance. Also, learning the tones as well...if I only had a little time before going to work, I would get it out and just pass coins over the coil and listen to the response, change a setting and do it again...Every chance I got I would get it out in the dirt in my yard or at a local park. I had already cleaned up my yard pretty good with the classic III, but there were still some goodies left for the E-trac. When I got a signal I felt was worth digging, I would change this or that to see what happened.

I apologize for this being long winded, I just wanted to relate my(ongoing) learning experience with the E-trac. My point is that there is no "hard and fast" method to learning your machine. Read the manual, watch some videos (youtube, minelabowners.com, etc.) Andy Sabisch has a book out that will help clear some things up. Read the forums, wealth of info here and on others. I won't lie to you, you may become frustrated at times but stick with it and one of these times out with it will just start "clicking" together and you will be rewarded for your steadfastedness.

If you have any specific questions about settings, adjustments or what they do...just ask and I'm sure someone will be able to point you in the right direction. Many people here willing to help you out. Remember, we were all newbies at one point...

HH and goodluck!

If you are not sure and you want to be in coins mode, follow these steps...

Press the menu button. (left of pinpoint)
scroll to user modes with arrow keys (far left)
press down arrow once (select)
press right arrow once...

Now you will see a screen that says "minelab modes", "my mode 1", "my mode 2", "my mode 3"
Press the down arrow to highlight "minelab modes"
press the right arrow to select pre-programmed modes from minelab
Now you will see a list of the different modes: Coins, high trash, beach, relics...

Press the down arrow once to highlight "coins" mode
Press the "detect" button (to the right of and closest to pinpoint) to select coins mode...You will be prompted to "apply selected mode?"
Press the right arrow "yes" to apply coins mode. Now you are in the detection screen. "noise cancel" and you are ready to go!

Don't be afraid to press buttons, it's the only way to learn and you can always go back into pre-programmed modes.

If you have not got Andy's book yet I would suggest that you get and read it.
It's one of the very best books there is to help with the Etrac.
Then just enjoy your new found toy and dig :)
Trust your ears. If, it sounds good dig it :)
You can always ask in here for help the people are awesome.
