The signal tones are reversed?:rage:

I was watching MLOTV, a video titled "Neil Jones - Advanced Etrac Program Explained part 1"

http://www.mlotv.com/view/454/neil-jones-advanced-etrac-program-explained-part1/

Neil has a microphone inside his headphones, and I don't understand why his threshold tones are so high, then his signals are low. Even lead appears to be low. Does anybody understand why? This is contrary to the way I have operated detectors for years. Iron is low, lead/coins/copper are high.

In another video with Neil, called Neil Jones - Advanced Etrac Program Explained - Settings

http://www.mlotv.com/view/440/neil-jones-advanced-etrac-program-explained-settings/

he sets the threshold tone to the lowest tone.

Somebody help me understand.......!!!!!!

I don't think I can help you understand. Don't know what his threshold pitch was or what his response was set at (I'm suspecting Long or Pitch Hold). I watched it this last winter and didn't know If I even wanted to listen to what he was hearing. I pretty sure he said he was using conductive tones, which is what baffles me and I think you too. I do know he was running basically All Metal. It seems to work for Neil though.

People in the UK have 1000s of years of history under their feet. They don't want to miss anything especially low conductors.
Most of the low conductors here are trash. I didn't watch the videos again, so I'm not certain this helps.

Slow n Lows response was set on smooth .That may be the diffrence.I Tried his settings before. They are to noisy for parks and such..It works well on cellar holes/old home sites tho if you can get used to the noise.

If the sounds are set to Ferrous then 1 on the scale is the highest tone and 35 is the lowest.

If the sounds are set to Conductivity then 1 on the scale is the lowest tone and 50 is the highest

Neil has a high threshold volume and must have Sounds=Ferrous rather than Sounds=Conductivity. This would account for the high threshold and low tones for good targets

but, his response is set to "Smooth", instead of the default "Normal". He said he was hunting in conductive sounds, but he also hunts in "All Metal" mode (No discrimination; wide open screen).

The super high tones you're hearing are from iron....the ground is full of iron there. Since he is hunting in "All Metal", his iron hits are not being masked. His machine was falsing on iron. The only thing I don't agree with him is when he says he sets his threshold pitch to the lowest tone to give him the widest range of tones.....my understanding of threshold pitch is that it will just change all signals to a higher or lower pitch based on if you increase or decrease this setting. For the widest range of tone, you have to set the "Variability" and "Limits" to the highest settings.

Hunting like that would drive me nuts! way to many sounds and the items he found were very shallow could have hunted in auto with a lot less noise and found all the same things he found

Ever hunted with someone who just kicks everybodys butt at finding targets? This is a good example of how that is possible. He has trained himself to be part of the ID process and not just the count on the detector. IF he can hear the tones he is looking for better for him then...hey dont knock it. Every ones brain is wired a little bit different. But thanks for pointing this out as I tried it just to see what it sounds like. I think Ill stick to my settings.

good luck

I noticed in Andy's book that he has his threshold tone (the settings were for the Explorer) set at 1. I'm can't remember what that would equate to on the E-Trac (4, 5, 6,??? just a guess)...but I wonder if that would make a difference. I have mine at 20 on the E-Trac. I haven't monkied with it, just set it during air test, but you know how the pitch will change when falsing off of iron even in Normal. NiagraCounty's right he runs smooth response.
