Think I hit pay dirt:clapping: A first for me.

Walking through the woods last nite before dark and getting bit up nasty by mosquitos although I sprayed really well. I made it to the foundation that I found the 3 large cents and spanish silver in the same hole only to find that it was so overgrown I could not get near it. So I put the coil down next to some stone walls that were near the foundation but I have not gotten to yet. This area was pretty well grown up too but I had literally about a 10 by 10 area altogether to semi swing the coil. Right next to the stone wall I get a 12-38 hit about 3-4 inches deep. No clue what this might be I dug carefully and find an oddball size coin in the hole. At first I'm thinking foreign coin but low and behold I see 2 cents and a wreath. I'm in shock now. The only target I dug last nite and its a 2 center.:clapping: Now I'm no expert on coins but I have a redbook and the coin being an 1864 I had to look closely at the motto. I'm not certain but sure looks like the scarce small motto to me!! If someone has an idea differently please let me know!!

well if it is the small motto one they go from 120 dollars to 30000 dollars depending on condition defo got four noughts on that last figure WHOOOPEE WELL DUG great story sleep well PLEASE DONT CLEAN IT

Too late on the cleaning already done......and I should know better but being a dug copper was very hard to read anything as dug. A little hot peroxide and then a bath in olive oil goes a long way. If at all given the condition it is worth at most $200 but that is still a high figure. Besides, the value fo me is just saving it from the dirt.

oh well you have got the pride of owning it congratulations its not everyday you bring up such a rarity happy hunting

Very nice find, congratulations on finding such a rare coin. -- Randy

Great find!!! I'd brave some skeeters to hunt an area like that!

To my untrained eye it looks like the large motto version but a better pic of the ribbon on the back would definitely help. Congratulations on a great find!

Super sweet coin:drool: and one that still eludes me...............WTG!!!

Real nice find Joe !

nice Joe I love a 2 center

Thanks guys and gals for all the kind words. So hard to see which motto we have. Even with the redbook description still hard to tell. Oh well either way I'm still happy to have dug it. HH Joe

Hey Joe, Congrats on a nice two cent piece. You did a fine job cleaning it...not too much. It is the large variety though. You can easily tell if you look at the spacing above and below the "In God". On the large variety it is evenly spaced on the ribbon. On the small variety there is extra space above and below the "In God" Still a super coin and in great shape.

Very nice find Joe! Those are high on my "want to find" list! Well done and thanks for the pictures.

Thanks Coinnut for the id and kind words. I try to only clean enough to make out what the item is. First thing I do is rinse the coin. Then I use 2 small glass bowls. 1 bowl with a little peroxide. I heat up the peroxide for 1 minute in microwave and then drop coin in. I will then pull coin out several times to check progress as to not overdo. I also now rinse with water and pat dry to stop the peroxide prosess. Once I feel that its ok I move on to the olive oil dip in the other bowl. This one I will sometimes let sit 5 minutes or sometimes a week. This 2 center I left in about a half hour. Then I will take a soft cotton cloth and gently pat out the oil. This prosess works really well on the 2 center because of its different base metal than a normal copper coin. Dependent on how bad of shape the coin is in sometimes it will only require the olive oil dip.

wow that seems to be a pretty lethal weapon peroxide never heard of it being used for coin cleaning before what metals can you use it for please i wouldnt use it on my best stuff but i defo have some coins mostly copper that could do with seeing the light of day again so let me know if peroxide can be used in this case cheers sad its not the small script never mind there always next time

I personally would only use on copper, brass and bronze type metals and alloys but no expert here. Wish I took a before pic of the coin.
